Roxette 30th Anniversary Tour: Turku, Finland – November 29 – #15

Maybe it’s time to widen my top list of concerts. Nah, doesn’t matter. Each concert is different and special for one thing or another and the one tonight was definitely a top gig. The show in Turku was magical and I dare to say: it was the best of the last 4 gigs this year!

The support act, Costello realized it’s better to keep those songs in, which have English lyrics than play only in Finnish. It worked better. What we were surprised at was that they started playing at 19:00. We expected the support act to start a bit later and there were almost no people inside the arena except for the first 4-5 standing rows. People started coming in during Costello’s part, but then again, they went out and occupied their seats only after a while.

Roxette started at 20:00. Marie was in an extremely top shape, smiling during the whole show, dancing a bit, swaying her hips many times and pointing at fans every now and then. At the end of the concert she tried to point at each and every fan in the front row. Per was also amazing tonight. Sounded fab! Besides bouncing around, we could see some hot moves from him. He even ”kicked” Christoffer in the ass. Talking about Christoffer, his intro to Joyride worked much better today than in Helsinki. The crowd was quite reactive.

Marie had some problems with the lyrics of Listen To Your Heart, looked at the crowd and asked for help, but almost before she could ask, we were already singing out loud to help her. The whole arena became one and sounded great. Marie even said a short ”sorry” into the mic while she was singing. Sorry for messing up the lyrics. No need to say sorry. We all loved her! Dea was again very supportive. Whenever she felt / heard that Marie might not remember the lyrics, either she just sang a bit louder or she mimed at Marie what’s next.

During The Heart Shaped Sea there were again some red cardboard hearts in the crowd and the Spanish fans brought their colorful wigs to wear them during Dressed For Success. It was fun. Åsa was filming a lot at this concert, too.

In THIS short video you can see Marie throwing kisses to some front row fans and Per realizing there was nothing else to do on a Saturday night in Turku. Hilarious!

Marie, Per and the whole band were filled with so much energy, I bet they could have played another show. And we would have gladly attended that one, too. A pity that this was the last concert for a while, but we don’t have to wait for so long. Hopefully, everyone will have some relaxing time with their families at home. Christoffer and Clarence will surely have less time for that, since Mr G probably already booked some studio hours and won’t let them rest for so long. Marie, Dea, Per, Chris, Clarence, Pelle and Magnus, thanx for all the great shows in 2014! Have a good rest until the next concert and amaze us all again in February 2015!

Per’s post after the concert:

TURKU UPDATE: Superb ending of the first leg of the XXX Tour! The massive Turku-crowd was outstanding and the band wasn’t too shabby either. Had a wonderful time, Marie in top shape + Magnus in his bartender-look = what else do you need? Films by Åsa tomorrow. Thanx everyone for showing up on the first 15 gigs of the tour, what would we do without you? All the love there is from P&M&Co.

Next gig (first one in 2015) is on 7th February in Auckland, New Zealand, where the new XXX stage design will premiere.

Roxette 30th Anniversary Tour: Helsinki, Finland – November 28 – #14

In my Tallinn review I wrote that gig made it to my Top3 best Roxette concerts ever. What can I say now? It got easily replaced by Helsinki last night! What a show it was!

The support act, Costello was on home turf and to our biggest surprise, they performed their songs in Finnish tonight. Except one song that they kept in English. We almost learned some of their lyrics and now they changed them to Finnish. OK, no sing-along then.

Roxette was greeted by an international front row this time again. Now some more Roxers joined us, so there were even more countries represented. Per was happy to see the familiar faces, he already mentioned us in his first speech, which you can watch HERE. I was very happy that while we were waiting, a younger girl from Finland joined us. It turned out that she started liking Per Gessle and Roxette after she heard Per’s Mazarin album 4-5 years ago. She was too young for her parents to let her go to any concerts years ago. Today was her first show. I love it that Roxette can still engage new fans.

Before the show everyone was thinking about Marie, if she was fine, if she would be sitting on stage or if not, then was everything fixed for her to be safe on stage or if she decided for standing during the whole show. Apply the latter one. She was standing all night and showed us how strong she is! She acted like she would really want us to see everything is alright with her. She even stood for some moments without holding the mic stand. This time the stand was fixed to the floor indeed. Even BoJo came up on stage and checked it with his own eyes. Marie was singing her heart out and enjoyed it to the full. It was just amazing! Perfect Day got a fab respsonse. Marie was satisfied with the crowd’s reaction and she showed Clarence a thumbs up and Clarence showed thumbs up, too. Some fans brought cardboard hearts with different texts on them and held them up during The Heart Shaped Sea.

The concert was so powerful and sound-wise it was awesome as well. Everyone acted so much during the whole show. Marie was smiling at the crowd all the time, showing some funny facial expessions, swaying her hips; Per and Chris played their guitars in several poses, e.g. leaning against each other’s back. That was a cool one! Per even took a round around Marie with his guitar. It was during The Big L., if my memory serves me right. It was so funny. What surely added a lot to Per’s mood tonight is that Åsa is here with him. She filmed a lot. Gabriel was also there, as well as Micke and Christoffer’s daughters. It’s good when the families are around, that’s clear. The band puts even more energy into the gig then.

Despite the fact that Christoffer’s intro to Joyride didn’t really catch this audience, the crowd was loud enough and Per said several times we sounded terrific. I haven’t filmed Chris’s solo, just the band presentation before that. You can watch it HERE. The Look got everyone on their feet, of course! Now the setlist was full, they didn’t leave out any songs this time. Introducing Real Sugar it turned out that yesterday Magnus’s fave Roxette album of all time was Baladas en español. Yeah, sure.

Per’s thoughts after the show:

HELSINKI UPDATE: Yea! Fab evening in Suomi! We’ve been playing this place so many times and it’s always a treat! Thanx for stopping by and help us out with the lyrics! See y’all next time! How about tomorrow in Turkku??? /P.

Hell yeah! Next gig (last one in 2014) is on Saturday (29th November) in Turku. See you there!

Roxette 30th Anniversary Tour: Kaunas, Lithuania – November 25 – #13

The 13th concert took place in Kaunas tonight. The 13th. Some say it’s a bad number… Definitely wasn’t a lucky one today.

Appr. 30 fans went to the venue earlier than any other local guys or girls. We chatted, had fun waiting. Fortunately, we found a warmer place inside one part of the building, so we didn’t have to stand outside in the very cold. When it was time to line up, we went to the scanners and waited for the security guys to come. At every 1st scanner there was a security guy, at every 2nd there was a security girl to check us before we entered the venue. The problem was that a guy could only check a guy, a girl could only check a girl. So there they messed up all our lines and some of us had to switch to another scanner. It’s not too useful, when no one speaks English there from the organizers’ part and you get the info quite late… Whatever. We started running like hell to get to best places. Some Roxers were already inside the arena, got to front row when some of us were stopped and were shouted at that it’s not the entrance. However, it was. Just they shouldn’t have let us in until 19:15. They just forgot to close the doors. So those fans, who were already inside, having their good places, also had to come out. What an organization…! There was another half an hour waiting in front of 2 doors that lead to our fan heaven. When the doors opened, the running started again and fortunately, all fans who were waiting there quite long got to the front row. It was again an international team there.

The support act was the same as in Tallinn and yes, they are from Finland, so they will most probably come to the 2 Finnish concerts, too.

During the intro, the band got on stage and we could see Marie was wearing her white jacket, Per’s funky jacket found its way back to the spotlight and he had new trousers on. Sleeping In My Car was over and The Big L. started. And then our worst nightmare happened. Marie got so insecure she fell to the floor. Everyone was shocked seeing what happened and we all felt so worried about Marie we just wanted to jump over the fences to help her. Dea was very fast reacting, approaching Marie, but she couldn’t help her to stand up. Per also checked the situation and couldn’t decide whether he should stop playing or not, but when he saw Marie showed she was fine he went on, however you could see he was so worried, too. In the end Peter Fredriksson, one of the technicians came on stage and helped Marie to stand up. When she was already standing, she mimed: ”I’m alright!” and smiled, but also showed it was hurting she fell down. She looked at everyone on the stage, shaking her head that it shouldn’t have happened, but at the same time smiled, so we hoped nothing serious happened to her. Still, it was so heart-breaking to see her falling. But how she got up and continued singing like nothing happened shows how strong she is. She is just amazing!

The show went on with Stars and before Spending My Time started, Per said: ”If you know the songs, please join in! You probably know them better than we do.” I’m not sure anymore that we know the lyrics better than them. When there was the crowd part of Spending My Time, we messed it up totally. It was surely because we were still too shocked by what we saw before. Marie couldn’t wait for us finding the right words to sing, so she went on with her version. So lovely!

After Crash! Boom! Bang! now Real Sugar was introduced the way like it’s a song from Room Service album, which Magnus really hates. Then Magnus said: ”No, it’s my favoruite Roxette album in the world! Except for Joyride, Look Sharp! and Travelling.” Per replied laughing: ”I’m speechless!” You can watch this part of the gig in THIS video.

Then we had another tough part, when She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio) started. At the beginning of the song Marie got insecure again and we started worrying about her again. Dea was there next to her very fast and asked Marie if she wanted a chair. Marie said yes after a while, so BoJo brought a chair for her and they helped her to sit down. It’s very hard now that Marie stands there alone, she can’t have anyone too close to her, like she had Jokke on her solo tour, where she could just grab Jokke’s arm for the whole show in Malmö to be able to stand stably. Dea is helping her so much, being there when she needs her, but she just can’t stay next to Marie during the whole concert. Since this point Marie was sitting during whole gig. Her facial expressions showed what she wanted to do with her body and we loved her dancing with her legs while sitting. She’s still so powerful even if she’s sitting! BUT: we do want the team and Marie herself to consider some safe solution. If it’s that she’s sitting during the whole show, let it be. It just can’t happen again what happened tonight. And it’s not because our fan hearts get broken when we see her like this, but her own safety and health. What if next time she falls and she breaks her arm or leg? No! We know she’s an amazon and we do know she’s so strong, but please, do consider something safer than just her holding the mic stand. Tonight we could see it’s just not enough on a worse day.

Roxette_in_Kaunas_01  Roxette_in_Kaunas_02

After The Heart Shaped Sea came Perfect Day and the crowd shouted before Marie started to sing: ”We love you, Marie!” She smiled and told the audience: ”Oh, I love you, too!”. Then came 3 faster songs, Fading Like A Flower, How Do You Do! and 7Twenty7. Marie was a rock star in that chair and she got even a bit tired after these songs, so when they were preparing for It Must Have Been Love she said: ”Oh it’s so nice to rest here!” Then we all started laughing and she laughed, too. She really rocks! And when we shouted we love you, we love you, we love you at them, Marie smiled and Per reacted: ”Thank you! You are very generous!” This, from the laughing part you can see in THIS video.

This time there was no hoolabaloo with Dressed For Success, Mike Lindström learned his lesson. But he still has to be faster with changing the plec holders, because Per almost ran out of guitar picks again. This time there were at least 2 new picks on the stand for the acoustic guitars, the rest were again from the past tour.

After Dangerous, the band got presented and after Christoffer’s intro came Joyride, as usual. The balloons got in the air like they had to and after the song the band left the stage. BoJo came to help Marie getting off the chair. We felt like she should rather stay on stage, because it wasn’t too easy for her to leave the stage.

After we were shouting and clapping our hands, 2-3 minutes later the stage was set for Watercolours In The Rain. Marie was shown to her place, sat down on the chair and gave a great performance of the song. Then it was time for Listen To Your Heart. The ending of the song was so strong and powerful! Marie’s voice is simply amazing! Then there was The Look and BoJo came on stage to help Marie get off the chair. Then we could already think they will miss the lullaby song, Queen Of Rain. And yes, they said goodbye to us, thanked for the wonderful evening, took a bow or even three and then the band walked off the stage, then Marie and Per waving to us walked off, too. Of course, turning back towards us before they finally left the stage.

Roxette_in_Kaunas_03  Roxette_in_Kaunas_04

We had some mixed feelings after the concert. If we consider it sound-wise and performance-wise, it was top, but seeing Marie having a bad day made us very sad and worried. Somehow the whole band was shocked, the talking in between the songs was not as it is usually. One could hear on Per’s voice, too, that he got insecure. And all team members somehow got close to Marie to ask if she was fine. One must love them for always caring!

After the show ended, we went backstage, since we knew they would leave the city by the RoxJet right after the concert. We just wanted to wave goodbye to them. Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet them, just saw the cars leaving with them for the airport. Anyway, we just waved goodbye and applauded them. We hope they saw it from inside the cars. Now there are 2 days to relax until the next gig. Have a good rest, Marie! We love you!

Per’s reaction after the show:

KAUNAS UPDATE: Supergig tonite. First time for us in this town. Great crowd. Funny band playing funny looking funny. but very powerful. Thanx everyone for coming. Vids tomorrow.

Update – Per shared this article with these words:

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: Two days off now. Don’t worry about Marie, folks. Since she can’t see that well on her right eye + her right leg is pretty weak = she stumbled on her mike stand (which is fixed to the floor) during Big L but came back with a smile on her face and new adventures awaiting in the wings. Helsinki next! /P.

Roxette 30th Anniversary Tour: Tallinn, Estonia – November 23 – #12

Where to start, where to start? Oh my God! I think last night’s concert just made it to my Top3 best Roxette concerts ever. The energy on and off the stage, the communication with the crowd, the sound, the whole thing was just so magical and special! Marie and Per, as well as the band saw there were many international hardcore fans at the concert and somehow it felt like it gave them even more power. Marie was shining, smiling all the time and having sometimes funny, sometimes flirting facial expressions, pointing at fans and showing she was happy to see them. Her voice was in – you guessed it – top shape. It might sound like a cliché though, but she really was in top form and the lyrics worked very well with her last night. Per was also in a fantastic mood, he was smiling from ear to ear during the whole gig and as usual, he just couldn’t stop stomping and bouncing all around the stage and we could see a gig again, where he licked the guitar picks quite often. We know from the plec interview it’s because it sticks more to the finger. The band was also having much fun and they entertained and involved us even more. Even if the setlist includes more slower songs vs. 2011-2012, there are still enough party hits in there.

Waiting for hours in front of the venue in the very cold weather was fun for those die hard Roxers who decided to spend some time together already before the concert. Towards the end of the waiting time we started singing just random non-Rox-related songs, then we were getting there and started singing songs from Roxette. Local people were arriving and they didn’t really want to join our singing, but we told them they will have to do this inside, so they’d better practice with us. Some of them felt like it was cool, some others remained rather silent. The security team was cooperative and nice to us. They just let us run inside the venue and all fans who were waiting so long outside to get to the front row could manage it. The international front row, besides Estonian fans consisted of Roxers from Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK. Maybe there were more countries represented, but I can’t remember more now.

At last, I got to hear Per’s mix tape (he prepared for this tour) inside an arena. We already started getting into party mood. The support act was from Finland (I think). They played rock ‘n’ roll, the frontman said. All songs with the theme of summer. The guy said it was their first time during the Roxette tour to perform, so I think they will be the support act for the rest of the tour this year. It seems we get to hear them 3 more times this way.

After the gear of the support act was removed from the stage, the crew used a vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet where Marie was standing – barefoot, of course. I didn’t get to see Per’s jacket live on my first concert during this tour, but maybe it’s better it had a rest last night again. The intro was just a real adrenalin kick while Roxette got on stage, before they started playing Sleeping In My Car. It’s a great opening song, the jumping could already start at the very beginning. The Big L. kept our mood on a high and Stars was also one of the best songs live at this gig. After Stars, Per asked us if we were having a good time. We all screamed, of course we were. Then he said they would be playing loads of their Roxette favourites and shouted: ”Let’s all join in!” And we did so when they started playing Spending My Time. The crowd sounded good when Per and Marie stopped and we sang the song further. Crash! Boom! Bang! was the same version they played on the 2011-2012 tour. It means Per was singing the first verse with a slight change in the lyrics and then Marie took the song over. A highlight on the setlist is Real Sugar for me. At least one song off Room Service album was much desired since long. Maybe it sounded better during the 2001 tour, but it immediately got us into party mood again. It was fun when Per introduced the song and he started joking with Magnus that Room Service is his fave Rox album of all time. Then Magnus corrected it’s Joyride. No, Look Sharp!, no, Joyride, no, Tourism! Then he sticked to Joyride being his fave album. The next ass-kicking song was She’s Got Nothing On (But The Radio). Per changed to his George Harrison guitar, licked the guitar pick and started off. Then it was time to slow down a bit. The Heart Shaped Sea sounds wonderful live! I like that at this song, the whole band is in the front and even Magnus is changing his bass guitar to an acoustic one. Only Pelle is missing, who sits at his drumset, joining in when it’s needed. After that came Perfect Day, so Per left the stage and while he did so, he tried to throw the plec he had in his hand to the crowd, but somehow it landed almost on Marie. Even Marie was laughing at it. Only Christoffer, Clarence, the magician of keyboards and Marie is on stage. Marie introduces Perfect Day like a very old song and that she hopes we remember it. How could we not remember this masterpiece? How she delivers it is just phenomenal and usually gets many fans into tears. Tonight there was a small change in the setlist. After Perfect Day, Roxette performed Fading Like a Flower instead of Watercolours In The Rain. Before they started playing FLAF, Marie told the crowd we were fantastic and she thanked for that. Actally, she told the audience several times how fantastic we were. How Do You Do! still rocks live and you can party on through 7Twenty7. Per realized at this song that he was running out of guitar picks, only 2-3 left on the mic stand. This time it was again Mike Lindström instead of Micke N-S who took care of Per’s gear. He was a bit late changing the plec holders. He just has to get used to the fact that Per is throwing more plecs than how many he can pick off the stand. By the way, there were no new plecs at this show. Per used plectrums from 2012. After 727 it was time for some Hollywood bonanza. One must love how Marie and Per are starting off with It Must Have Been Love. Per steps next to Marie, touches her shoulder, they look into each other’s eyes and Marie starts singing. Then of course, when they stop singing and want to hear the crowd if they know the lyrics. Still a great feeling. Dressed For Success will be remembered from this show forever. The music started, Marie sang her yeah x 3, but something was wrong. Per stopped playing immediately and brought his guitar to Mike Lindström. Yeah, shit happens, but until everything got solved, Magnus entertained us with a short stand up comedy show. Check part of the mess in THIS video. 😉 Per’s ”Ready? Steady?” and the crowd’s ”Go!” was too cool. Then Per said when he realized he could play his guitar in the right key ”That’s it!” I tell you, for hardcore fans it was awesome to experience such a hoolabaloo. It was really entertaining. Dangerous went fine, then the band got introduced and Christoffer did his magic. The Estonian part of the crowd was loud with their reaction to it. We started blowing our balloons and let them fly after the magic word in Joyride was sung. Dea came close to Marie, helped her going off stage and the whole band disappeared. We were clapping our hands, shouting and asked them to come back. We just wanted more! I almost thought I will miss hearing Watercolours In The Rain since it was not performed when it was on the earlier concerts, but seeing the stage being set up for that for the start of the extras, I was happy I won’t miss it hearing live. Dea and Marie came on stage and delivered the song beautifully. Actually, as the first song of the extras it fitted much better, I think. Then suddenly, a thought crossed my mind that maybe they would leave out something else then, but no, they played all songs that were left to be performed. After WITR came Listen To Your Heart. Marie’s voice was so powerful! The Look kicked ass, the crowd joined in with the nanananas, the band was on a high. Then sadly, it was time to say goodbye. Per said they hope to see us very soon again. Oh, he will! Some of us shouted, yeah, on Tuesday! Queen of Rain sounded indeed like a perfect lullaby. Fantastic to hear it live again! The show ended with the usual bow, then Marie and Per waving to the crowd, walking towards backstage, turning towards us again and waving goodbye. The crowd was melting! Pure awesomeness it was!

At some point, I’m not sure before which song, PG asked Marie how she felt. It felt like he asked her because he knew we’ve been worrying about Marie so much and he wanted us to hear it from Marie herself that she feels so good. And she did. You could see it every second that she enjoyed the show to the full.

Åsa was not present, but we were happy to see Micke to film some short videos, which now you can already see on Roxette Official. Marie played with the iPhone camera and showed some cool facial expressions when Micke was filming her. Loved it!

After this amazing gig, Per & Co says:

TALLIN UPDATE: Superb gig in Tallinn! Thanx everyone for showing up and making this such a glorious event!!! Some technical hoolabaloos yes…. but everyone had a great time on and off stage. One to remember for sure!!!!! Glad everyone enjoyed the evening, we certainly did! Lots of love from all of us! /P&CO

PS. And hey!!!! So cool to see so many familiar faces in the front row! Welcome back!

Explaining the hoolabaloo under the same post:

We aborted DFS due to the fact that I got my guitar with a capo in the wrong place so I couldn’t play DFS in the right key. Shit happens. No big deal. We all love when a band have to re-start a song!! We’re all humans! Except Pelle. /P.

Next gig is on Tuesday (25th November) in Kaunas. See you there!

Roxette 30th Anniversary Tour: Moscow, Russia – November 21 – #11

Who would have thought, but after all the ”best so far” gigs in Russia, Moscow became No. 1! The concert was officially sold out and 8000 people were there in the crowd to make noise. The crowd was really fab, their hands were in the air all the time and they were singing, jumping and dancing during the whole show. Those who attended the concert say they had an extraordinary experience. Roxette is a band that needs no support act to warm up the crowd. From what I could see, Moscow audience brought the most balloons during the Russian leg of the tour. They looked very good in the air during Joyride.

Perfect Day got back to the setlist to make it complete for the last Russian show. Marie was not sitting during any of the songs this time. Per was jumping even more than usual, Ms Effe sounded awesome and the band was on a high, too. So much on a high that Dea, Mister Magnus and Chris came off the stage during The Look and went close to the crowd to party a bit together with them. So cool! This show was a perfect way to celebrate Clarence birthday’s eve. Grattis, Clarence!

Per & Co about Moscow show and all 11 Russian concerts:

MOSCOW UPDATE: Truly fab gig tonite. Wonderful crowd and a band on fire. Thanx RUSSIA for taking care of us on this tour!! Eleven unbelievable gigs!!!
We’ve had a splendid time and appreciate all your love and affection beyond limits! So many cities I can’t even spell that wlll stay in my (and our) hearts forever. We all truly hope we can come back before long!!!!! LOVE FROM P & CO

Next gig is on Sunday (23rd November) in Tallinn.
