Fan stories

Gabba77: May the devil take Google Translate – and all of you guys would not had read these horrible reviews…
But I was there and I must say that I was really surprised about the big interest for the concert. I had thought that there would probably be 10-15 hardcore fans who would insist on being in the front row and then a lot of curious people who would like just to be there to see this famous duo Roxette.
But 2 hours before the concert I realized I was wrong. There were a lot of fans. People from Germany, Sweden, England, Argentina, Peru and Denmark of course. But not only the fans – everybody wanted a place up front.
It also really surprised me that people seemed to know all the lyrics. I stood among some people with an age of about 20 years – (They were not what we call fans.) They had hardly learned to speak as Joyride was released. But they sang along on all the songs – not only Joyride, LTYH, The Look & IMHBL that you hear on the radio from time to time. But they also knew the lyrics of songs like Fading Like A Flower & Dangerous which you never hear on the radio here.
I had never dreamt that so many people with a Roxette passion were hiding here in Denmark. What a nice surprice!
The reviwer from Gaffa.dk writes that he has been writing several hundreds of music reviews during the last ten years and he has never before experienced such an enthusiastic audience as met Roxette at Smukfest.
It is a big shame that it seems that nobody recorded the moment that Roxette entered the stage and started playing Dressed For Success – it simply does not get any bigger!
What a thrill, what blessing what a big moment – Hallelujah!

  2. @anders: I read your opinion but I disagree with you in some parts, which means.. nothing! jaja. I agree the need of a percussion guy.

I really esteem Christoffer, i can’t tell you Chris is better than Jonas because it would be a biased point of view (for me Christoffer is the best musician who worked with Per and i’m a hardcore fan of Brainpool) but to be true the most important thing is that they sound good, professional and they really have fun. For me it’s more than enough. What i miss is the talent of M.P. Persson.

Ps. I do like you sommatider/flicken i en cole porter sång cover!

  4. Flicka: it’s ok to announce one’s website once, but 4 times on the same article?
Besides that, the pictures and setlist can be found here and on TDR/roxette.se, where the pictures are stolen from, even though you cut out the copyright mark Thomas put on the pictures, we are not dumb. That is surely NOT nice and nothing we support here.

  5. Just wanted to add that I’m also a hardcore Brainpoolfan aswell. it’s me that is the “crazy fan” appearing in this “En händig man” extras-video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OXXMyjrAyc

Chris is first checking out our touringbus 😉 And me coming out after buying an ice-cream seeing Jens Jansson going around filming… I sort of got …. mental. And caught the moment 😉

  6. SORRY JUDITH, my intention was not to cause discomfort. Those pictures gave me the one friend I did not know that these photos had copyright. My friend gave me photos as they are on the blog and I would not change anything, maybe it was him.
My only intention was to announce a new space to talk about Roxette and share the joy of having returned to the stage. I did not want to hurt anyone.
My apologies if I made a mistake, I promise, check the information in future publications and not cause more discomfort.

  7. Negative reviews are usually more fun to write and usually they can gain more readers that way. That’s explain why tabloids also has more readers than regular magazines.

I’m pretty sure if Marie never got sick, they’ll find the way to trash her, because again it’s more fun that way.

  8. Yes Majdy, we should keep in my that also a young & fresh ’91 Roxette could have gotten only 3 stars. 😛

Gabba77, your review is great! Will add it to the post.

  9. Did they really cut so many songs? Was this because they were performing as part of a festival?

The videos all look great to me 🙂 and thanks Gabba77 for the review.

I try not to take critics to heart, I remember even back in 1992 one of the critics who reviewed the Roxette concert had more negative things to say about Marie’s appearance than any intelligent musical critisicm.
I was just suprised because what I was reading was not matching any of the videos I have been seeing so far 🙂

  10. I just read one newspaper afterwards and stopped immediately, went out of the shop…had a big laugh and thought that these people are just mean. Nothing more. I don’t care about others opinions about Roxette anymore. Especially not when they are from reporters. They seem to have stuck in Joyride times. Like some fans also have. On the other hand…when I listen to the Zürich concert today…eehm..was this sound really so great???
This show in Skanderborg was just wonderful!! From my point of view Marie was in top shape, also the others of course.

PS: drove around in my car with some older Roxsongs today and realised that I don’t know some of the lyrics anymore too…. 😉 So we are all just human beings.

  11. I have my own comments I could make about the future of Roxette and about a world tour but I’m not doing here… I may write a post on my own blog in the near future… however I enjoyed the come back concert on Saturday, I’ll enjoyed Halmstad on Saturday to come.

I don’t give a shit about press reviews who are paid to write whatever without any regards to the feelings of those they are writing about (remember they are paid and they write to sell papers!) At the end of the day Per and Marie judge the reaction of what they see in the eyes of the fans and the crowd, not the press that I am sure… the likes of the internet is the true judge to Per and Marie on who the real critics are these days which of course was never around 20 years ago, who cares about bad press reviews when they can pull in 16,000 in a place like Sundsvall and an expected 20,000 in Halmstad!

  12. I also forgot some of the lyrics, and I know I used to know them 🙂 Others are like tattooed in my brain 🙂
So what, even Per looks at the monitor to make sure he sings right, that’s what makes it a live show.

For perfect timing, sound, keys and lyrics -> listen to the albums.

  13. I have seen the videos and the performances are not THAT awful…

…but not that great either. There is some truth to the articles. In the eyes of someone who is not a roxette fan (eg. the reporters) I believe it is natural to be dissapointed. Marie is a great performer but she never sings like in the studio albums. If you have ever seen Tina Turner, Celine Dion or Annie Lennox live in concert, you will see that they can sing just like in the records and I believe that’s what the general audience wants.

Also as someone else pointed out, the arrangements for the live versions are rather poor. Attempting a “garage band” sound is not good. People who are not fans expect a different thing I believe.

My personal opinion is that Marie is fantastic. Even more, I am convinced she has not lost the hability to reach the high notes. You can see the video of Listen To Your Heart from the secret gig in Tylosun that proves just that. She is still amazing!

But I think the problem is that after her illness Marie has turned into a very shy, fragile and insecure person. In some gigs she is this super-woman who is going to conquer the world with her voice, in some other gigs you can barely hear her and she just whispers what she is singing. I don’t think she will get better with time. It’s more like a random thing, 2 OK shows, 1 really good one, then 5 hmmmpfff shows. This will not change with this warm-up minitour. It’s part of the damage that the tumor did to hear and we have to accept that if the critics say that a gig was not that good, they are probably right.

  14. Marie has never sounded like on the albums, not now, not 10 years ago. I cannot tell why, must be the production..

But I have to disagree about the being shy/insecure. Sure, she is, she was always shy and she always needed a bit of warm-up, when she came back on stage after the illness this was huge.
But this tour, compared to older performances of the past years, and even NOTP, is wow! I am amazed every time I see her walk/dance around the stage (she did that very very little during NOTP).

As I said, negative critics: yes, but the problem is that they are MEAN. That is a no go.

Whatever, audience had most of the times another opinion and those are the ones who buy the tickets 😉

On the other side, it starts to get annoying to put it all on the illness. I know we all do, but cmon, the 2001 tour was bad, no motivation on stage at all, yeah wow, sound and lights were great, but honestly, I prefer the band as it is now, having fun, and less effects.

  15. I agree with everything Judith just said 😀

Personally I think these concerts are wayyyyy better than the Room Service Tour, especially energy wise. One reason I think Marie has always sounded rougher live is that you can hear her really pushing her voice. One thing I am really glad to see (which they could have used on the Room Service tour) is the use of the earplug monitors. These help singers hear themselves perfectly no matter where they are on stage – and makes it easier to sing more relaxed. You can see how relaxed (and happy!) Marie is in these latest videos….
which leads me to another awesome link from the show!

    (Sleeping In My Car)

and is it me or do they get better looking with age? Per’s latest hair (particularly in the backstage pictures) is HAWT!!!

  16. I wouldn’t say there was a lack of motivation for the Room Service tour. Comparing the concerts with the superb RS showcase, I think they simply drowned a bit in the big production. While the showcase (I went to Cologne) felt fresh and energetic like the current gigs (judging these from video) – they seemed kinda rushed by the strict programming for sequencer tracks, light and video in 2001. Just what they avoided this time with the “garage band” concept.

  17. yes, the showcase in Barcelona felt like Leif last week!!
But I don’t get the garage band feeling.. I just think they are closer to a more spontaneous-fun-flexible show than before

  18. @ Judith ; I agree , this time Roxette feels a lot better than R.S. tour , its obvious Marie’s problems but c’mon It must have been love or LTYH are 1.000 % better than 2001 and yes the “motivation” factor feels so strong now .
The only “thing” are the cover & PG songs nothing against , but we want Roxette this time
