Per Gessle on Nordic Rox – June 2025

Sven Lindström and Per Gessle are counting down from 10 to 6 on their Swedish best of the ’80s list on the June episode of Nordic Rox. Before that, the guys kick off the show with a bang and play By The Grace Of God by The Hellacopters from 2002.

The next song is Blue Ruin by Say Lou Lou from their latest album called Dust, which came out half a year ago.

Then comes Nothing Out There by Alberta Cross. Per doesn’t know anything about Alberta Cross, so he asks Sven to tell something about them. Sven explains that the creative force behind the band is a guy from Sweden, Petter Ericson Stakee. He moved to London some 20 years ago and he’d been having London as his base, and he formed Alberta Cross there. They are mostly British musicians, Sven thinks. They made some changes in the lineup, but they have been touring and releasing albums ever since. PG thinks it’s a good song. Sven agrees that it’s a cool track.

The guys move on with more good-looking music in the shape of You’re Breaking My Heart by NONONO.

Before getting down to the ’80s countdown, Sven and Per look back on the ’80s in Roxette history. Sven says the listeners will hear a track that they both know and still don’t, because they haven’t heard this version really that much. PG explains they are talking about Roxette’s The Look and Per’s demo from 30th March 1988, Halmstad. He wrote the song for the Look Sharp! album and it was actually written for Marie to sing. So the lyric Per is singing is „he’s got the look”, because it was supposed to be sung by Marie. It sounds a little bit different. And also the classic famous guitar riff of The Look isn’t there on the demo. It’s something that they made up in the studio while recording the song. This is how it started out. Per wrote it because he had bought a new synthesizer, an Ensoniq ESQ-1. Sven loves that synthesizer sound. Mr. G says, to learn how to program the synthesizer, he wrote two songs and The Look was one of them. Sven wants to know which the other one was. It was Don’t Believe In Accidents. That one is on Spotify, but it didn’t make any album. But The Look made it all over the world. Sven says that it was the song that in 1989 would open up the world for Roxette. Per confirms. It became their first US number one, and it became number one in so many countries he can’t even remember.  Those were the days.

The guys are now entering the ’80s top 10 countdown. Spela under hot (Play Under Threat) by a southern Swedish band, Wilmer X is No. 10. Per thinks it’s an amazing band. They have been around for a very long time, and they are so special also because they sing in a very southern dialect. According to Per, it sometimes restricted them a bit, because a lot of people in Sweden don’t understand what they are saying, because the dialect is so heavy. But it’s a great band, and they are still around, and they just sound amazing. They have a harmonica player, Jalle Lorensson. He is really good, Sven thinks. This album, Under hot was recorded more or less live in the studio. Wilmer X broke through a couple of albums before this, but this one sort of cemented their position and gave them the reputation of being one of Sweden’s best rock bands. Per agrees.

The Final Countdown by Europe is No. 9 from 1986. Per thinks it’s a great track. It’s a US top 10 record that peaked at number eight. Europe had quite a few hits during this era. They were a great band, influenced by the times, the Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and that kind of stuff. Melodic metal. Joey Tempest wrote really good songs, and this is at their prime. It still sounds like a hit record today. It might be a little long, but Per is sure there was a radio edit. Haha. Sven says they might have a look at the ending here and fade it out a bit earlier on Nordic Rox. Haha.

At position No. 8 there is a Swedish classic artist, Ulf Lundell, who debuted in 1975. In the late ’70s and early ’80s he became like a household name in Sweden. He was very influenced by Springsteen and Bob Dylan. He had lyric-oriented stuff and he was also an amazing performer. He had a great band too. This album, Kär och galen came out in 1982. It was his commercial peak. Sven and Per picked the song Aldrig nånsin din clown, which translates to never ever your clown. Per loves Sven’s translations and he thinks it’s a really cool song. They don’t think they ever played it on Nordic Rox before, so it’s an American radio debut here. It also has a wonderful guitar solo by Ulf’s sidekick, Janne Bark. Janne was also a great performer. Per worked with him a bit as well. Mr. G thinks he is a great guitar player, but he really came to his prime when he worked with Ulf.

After the song is played, Sven says they are still grooving here with Per. Haha. Then they are moving up to No. 7 on their chart. Sarah by Mauro Scocco is played. Mauro was the lead singer of a duo in the ’80s called Ratata. It was a great band, very influenced by Scritti Politti, Michael McDonald, that kind of style. Mauro made his debut album in 1988, and this was the first single. It became a monster. Sven says that some would probably call it yacht rock, but they don’t. PG thinks it’s a great track and Mauro is a great singer.

No. 6 is a beautiful Swedish artist called Monica Törnell and her Vintersaga. She had a breakthrough in the early ’70s. Per thinks she is a brilliant singer who has always had a standout voice. Mr. G had the privilege of writing a couple of songs for her in the ’80s as well. This song was written by a guy called Ted Ström, who was a member of a band called Contact. It’s a bleak picture of Sweden in the wintertime. It became a massive hit on Swedish radio, because a lot of people recognize the feeling of that sort of bleak sadness. It’s got a really strong melody, and the production is wonderful. It’s got this warm, analog synthesizer sound. For Per, it’s one of the greatest tracks in the ’80s.

The last 2 songs on the show are Dow Jones Syndrome by The Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Notes by Dominique. Sven thinks Dominique is a great artist. Per agrees and adds that she has a fantastic voice. Sven says we will probably hear a lot more from her in the future.

Sven and Per thank the listeners for joining them and the show ends with Cigarettes by Anita Lindblom, as usual.

Still is from the Bag Of Trix talks recorded by Anders Roos.

Thanks for your support, Sven!

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Mérida – 28th June 2025 – #17

The Spanish heat adventure continued in Mérida, Spain last night. Roxette performed at the STONE & MUSIC Festival as the closing act of the festival’s 10th anniversary edition to crown the event.

The venue was simply wonderful, the ruins of the Amphitheatre of Mérida, a Roman amphitheatre completed in the year 8 BC. What a setting!

A couple of hours before the show, at 19:45 Roxette had the honour to receive the Via Musicorum Award in Mérida. Per shared some pics and a vids from the ceremony (1, 2, 3) and you can see some content on the festival’s social media sites (1, 2) as well. Per dedicated the plaque also to Marie of course and he said it’s a privilege to be here.

Via Musicorum is an initiative launched in 2021 by the STONE&MUSIC Festival and Mérida City Council.

Per unveiled the vinyl on the Mérida Music Trail. The event was attended by the president of the Badajoz Provincial Council, Raquel del Puerto, who highlighted the STONE&MUSIC Festival’s commitment to quality music and the value of a band like Roxette, whose songs form part of the vital soundtrack of several generations. The event was also attended by Catalina Alarcón, Councilor for Social Services, Senior Citizens, and Housing of the Mérida City Council.

Roxette’s vinyl is the 26th to be added to the Music Trail, and can now be seen alongside those of national and international artists such as Deep Purple, Tom Jones, Status Quo, Europe, Andrea Bocelli, among others.

The piece in question – of which Per received a replica – was designed and crafted by local artisan workshop Terracota Mérida. Each plate features a vinyl record representing the tiles of a Roman mosaic, with a circular bronze plaque in the center. The plaque bears Per’s signature along with the date of the concert.

The work is framed in polished black granite and features the band’s name sandblasted in gold, as well as the festival logo and that of Mérida City Council, giving the work a visual balance in keeping with the urban environment.

The concert started at 22:15. The temperature was still very high, but it didn’t matter. The band found a devoted, wild sing-along audience in front of them and they were also in top shape on stage. Everyone had so much fun! Even if there were seats, no one really used them. Haha.

There was no curtain with the Roxette logo, no LED wall with the projections, but the beautiful ruins of the amphitheatre and the lights provided the backdrop. ¡Maravilloso!

The setlist was the same as in Madrid, including Christoffer’s intro to Joyride (Paquito el Chocolatero).

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Madrid – 27th June 2025 – #16

Noches del Botánico is a series of concerts in Madrid in the Royal Botanical Garden of Alfonso XIII (Real Jardín Botánico de Alfonso XIII). Roxette came to this place to perform a sold-out show.

You could enter the festival area at 19:30 and Roxette was set to start at 22:00. The heat is unbearable during the day and the temperature starts to get OK at 22:00, so it seemed to be great timing. The staff at the venue was very nice. They let us stay in the shade while queueing. Approximately 70 people came earlier, some of them had been waiting all day.

There was no support act, so the staff decided to keep us outside the stage area, so that we could still be standing in the shade, as in front of the stage the sun was still shining very strongly. They let us in after 21:00.

Before we were let in, Christoffer came out to us and had a selfie time with all the fans and chatted with them.

The LED wall was back. It has very cool projections, so it also adds to the whole party feeling.

Spanish people know how to sing along very loudly. The crowd was amazing! The band was in top shape and Per was touched by the support of the fans, he thanked them several times. The audience was stunned by Lena’s performance and she got a lot of „Brava!” shout outs.

When Lena was introduced in the beginning of the show, she said she felt great and talked a bit in Spanish: „Me siento genial!” She wasn’t sure she pronounced it correctly, but the crowd was cheering her anyway. She said it’s very hot here, Per said it will get even hotter. Then Lena said she likes it hot, so she feels good.

During the band presentation, all band members got a loud cheering and when it came to Dea, her name was shouted by front row fans: Dea! Dea! Dea!, so Per said she has her own fan club here. Haha.

Christoffer played Paquito el Chocolatero as the intro to Joyride.

When Lena and Per came back on stage for the encore, Lena saw a Swedish flag and told Per in Swedish. First Per couldn’t realize what she was talking about, but then Lena explained it to him in English. Haha.

Before they started to play Queen Of Rain, the crowd was singing olé-olé-olé-olé.

In the crowd, there was Niklas Strömstedt as well.

The setlist was the same as in Munich.

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Munich – 23rd June 2025 – #15

After a sold-out show in Viborg, Denmark, the Roxette gang landed in Munich, Germany for yet another sold-out gig.

Tollwood Summer Festival takes place in the Olympiapark. You could enter the festival area anytime, but gates to Tollwood Musik-Arena, the arena where the concerts are held, opened only at 18:00. There were long lines at all three entrances, despite the fact that it started raining heavily several times.

While queuing, we could hear the soundcheck at around 17:00.

After entering the venue, we realized there was a merch stand inside the arena. This was the first place on this leg of the tour where you could buy merch.

The arena was actually a big tent and it was so hot inside that you could feel like you were in a sauna. The concert was set to start at 19:00 and special guest Moss Kena warmed up the crowd that was clapping loudly for long until 20:15 when Roxette entered the stage.

The setlist was the same as in Viborg, there was only one extra song, Queen Of Rain at the end.

After SIMC, Per greeted the Munich crowd and said it’s always a treat to be here and great to see so many people. He said it’s hotter here than in Sweden. Haha. The crowd was laughing. It was really like a sauna. PG said they would play some of their favourite Roxette songs and asked the audience to sing along, no matter if they knew the lyrics or not. Then he turned to Chris so that he could start the next song, but Chris pointed at Lena and then Mr. G realized that he forgot to introduce her. Per introduced Lena as a new member of the Roxette family. The crowd cheered for Lena. She greeted the audience too and said “Mir geht’s super”. The crowd cheered for her even louder. She continued saying it’s her first time in Munich, so she feels like a virgin, touched for the very first time and she likes it. Then Chris started playing DFS.

After DFS, Per said ”OMG, you’re on fire!” to the audience. So he slowed down a bit and after explaining that the band went to Capri to record this album in the ’90s, he started to play the title song, CBB.

SGNO kicked off the roof, but after that it was time to slow down a bit again. Lena dedicated IMHBL to Marie and the audience cheered.

HDYD was a hit and so was Dangerous. Then PG introduced the band. Magnus had his I Got You (the James Brown song) moment again, Clarence started to play Neverending Love and the crowd was singing along. Jonas, the good old Roxette member, who took an almost 20-year break, got a very loud and long cheering from the audience. On backing vocals and some funky tambourine there was Dea, one of Per’s favourite singers. On drums, a new kid on the block, Norpan Eriksson, an amazing guy. And last, but certainly least, the last living hippie in Sweden and probably in all Scandinavia, Christoffer on lead guitar. As the intro to Joyride, Chris played In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus. The Munich crowd was extremely happy to hear it.

After Joyride, the band went off stage, but the crowd didn’t stop clapping for a second until they came back again after a longer while. Mr. G changed his shirt, the black one to a white one and came back with Lena only. They performed Spending My Time as a duet without the band. Per said he wrote it on the very same afternoon as Joyride, it was a busy Tuesday. Haha. After the song, reacting to the crowd’s loud sing along, Lena said it was pure magic.

LTYH was the next encore song and here I have to mention that I just love the tribute to Pelle here. There is that drum part kept in it the way Pelle played it during the past years with Roxette. Always amazing to hear it.

We thought the gang would finish the set with The Look. After TL, Per thanked the audience for coming, wished them a fantastic summer and he said he hopes to see them again somewhere down the road. He asked to take care of each other and stay safe and sound. And then instead of taking a bow, they performed QOR as the last song. Wonderful!

The whole concert was simply magical! The crowd was fantastic, they were singing along to each and every song very loudly and clapping along as well. The band rocked big time and Per was on a high despite the strong heat. Lena is gaining more and more self-confidence, and even if these songs are not in her DNA, she performs them outstandingly well. In Munich there were many hardcore fans from different countries. There are big Marie fans among them and they mentioned that they like the fact that Lena doesn’t want to imitate Marie. She is doing her own thing and that makes the show enjoyable even for them, so they don’t have to compare Lena to Marie all the time. She is doing a fab job and has an awesome voice.

At the end of the show, not only Per threw his remaining picks from the mic stand, but also Norpan threw his drumsticks to the crowd.

Extremely hot in the arena (especially for old retired ppl like me) but my God, can’t thank you enough for your support! Lena was on fire and so was the band. I’m in good hands, hahaha! Thanks everyone!

Lena after the gig:
