Interview with Maria Sörgjerd: “It was fascinating that people had travelled so far just to see Roxette”

We interviewed Maria Sörgjerd, the author of “I en underbar ballong”, the book about Roxette fans. So here you can read the “behind the scenes” of the book.

RXB: Maria, could you tell us about you? how long have you been a Roxette fan?

As a Swedish girl, born in the mid 1970s, I couldn’t avoid Roxette when I was growing up. I have many positive memories connected to Roxette. When I was 16, I went to my first big concert: Roxette in ”Globen” 1991, the Joyride Tour. But I can’t say that I was a devoted Roxette fan back then, even though I liked their music. I became a real fan much later in life. When I was growing up I listed to all sorts of music, Neil Young, The Beatles, Abba, just to mention a few.

In the beginning of the twenty-first century, I rediscovered and upgraded music that I had listened to as a teenager, a time in life which is of great importance for one’s identity. At the same time, Marie fell ill and this affected me strongly on a personal level. I was trying to get pregnant by means of medically assisted reproduction and a test indicated that I might have problems with fertility because of a brain tumour. Fortunately, this was not the case, but I was really scared during a couple of weeks, while waiting for the test results. During this time, I listened more and more to Marie’s music and I felt that I could on some level relate to what she was going through. Small coincidences in life can make you discover new paths… My fertility issues could be solved and I am now mother of two wonderful girls, six and seven years old.

RXB: We understood that you studied (music) psychology, could you explain why and how you got the idea to write the book?

I studied psychology for two years, 1998-2000 and I wrote a major essay on the topic of music psychology. The essay was called “Auditory and visual recognition of emotional expression in performances of music”. I came up with the idea to write the book “I en underbar ballong” two and a half years ago, in the summer of  2010 when I was at a Roxette concert in Halmstad. That was when I got to know many international fans in real life, and not just over the Internet.

From my Swedish perspective, it was fascinating that people had travelled so far, from different corners of the world, from Europe, Argentina, Brazil and Russia, just to see Roxette. I had a great experience in Halmstad and it felt so huge that Roxette was back on stage again. It gave me a real energy boost.

RXB: When did you start writing the book then?

During the fall of 2010, after the concert in Halmstad, the idea to write something about Roxette grew stronger. I found inspiration through talking to my friends. At first, I aimed at writing an essay, but then the project grew bigger. I had made friends with a fan from Argentina (her name is Paula), she told me what it means to be a real Roxer.

Gyllene Tider’s new single out on March 18, album on April 24

EMI Sweden announced on a press release that Gyllene Tider’s new single, “Man blir yr”, will be released on March 18. The album “Dags att tänka på refrängen” will be released on April 24th.

Here is the translation of the press release:

Don’t ask us how it happened, but Gyllene Tider seems to have rested themselves into shape again.

Nine years after the comeback album “Finn 5 fel!” we get “Man blir yr”, the first teaser from the .. hm.. comeback album “Dags att tänka på refrängen”, which was recorded while it was the dreariest, darkest and coldest time of year in Christoffer Lundquist’s studio the Aerosol Grey Machine down in Skåne.

- All the songs have been written for Gyllene Tider, so the contenders for the single were razor-sharp. But that’s a good sign, says Per Gessle modestly.

One tends to agree. The rhythm section consisting of Anders Herrlin and Micke Syd is snappier than ever. Göran Fritzon’s Farfisa organ has been serviced and MP’s and Per’s guitars battle it out in stereo.

Besides, dizzieness is as you may know a famous theme in classical pop music. You don’t have to dig very deep to find Tommy Roe’s “Dizzy” and The Beatles’ “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” in every record collection worthy its name.

“Man blir yr” will be digitally released on March 18. But don’t forget to clean your record needle: the song is also going to be released on 7″ red and yellow vinyls. Back to the future!

PS: further good news for all GT fans is that the previously released CD-digipack versions of the albums “Gyllene Tider”, “Moderna Tider” and “Puls” will be also released digitally on March 18. These versions contain a number of bonus tracks that have never been released before on digital format.

It all started with Roxette

Maybe you all know Jacob Wallgren, a Roxette fan and great collector. Maybe you already asked a list of items from him or met him on a gig. He’s a Halmstad guy who is now starring in SVT’s “Antikrundan” program. A short SVT article says that he started collecting vinyl records when he was 9 years old. He says it all started with Roxette. Today Jacob has one of the largest collections in Sweden of more than 30,000 items. The video is a great promotion for Roxette and nice to watch for all the fans and vinyl collectors. Now I’m just wondering who the biggest record collector in Halmstad is. ;)

Marie Dimberg is on the top

Musikindustrin.se sent questionnaires to 100 key people of the Swedish music industry and then listed the 21 most influential women in Sweden’s music world. Marie Dimberg has ended up at the first place on this list. Congrats to her!

Marie Dimberg_2013  © Jonas Ekströmer

She says to gp.se:

I feel very honoured. I was very happy and surprised, but being influential is nothing I’m thinking about all the time. I’m just trying to concentrate on doing my job as good as possible.

The music industry is dominated by men, which is not new. Ms. Dimberg says to gp.se:

A good mix of men and women would be necessary regardless of industry.

During her 13 years with EMI she held the positions of Head of PR, Marketing and Vice President of EMI International in London to mention a few. She founded D&D Management more than 15 years ago and runs it successfully. Marie Dimberg played a major role in the creation of Roxette and she’s still the manager of the Swedish duo.

Regarding Roxette becoming popular worldwide she says to gp.se:

It was an amazing adventure and a privilege to be involved. We woke up in one place and were having lunch at another then fell asleep somewhere else.

There are many great artists – besides Roxette – managed by D&D: Marie Fredriksson, Per Gessle, Jonas Åkerlund, Peter Jöback, Agnes, etc.

If you are interested in who else is in the most influential women’s Top21, you can check it here.

Gyllene Tider enters the soccer world

As Gyllene Tider published the news on Monday, they are going to sponsor 2 Halmstad soccer teams: Halmstads BK and IS Halmia. Per Gessle is already a major sponsor of Halmia since many years.

Gyllene Tider is divided into two soccer camps. Per, MP and Göran are supporting Halmia, while Micke Syd is for HBK. 3:1 is not a bad result of a ”match”. Oh, we didn’t forget about Anders: he prefers fishing. ;)

Micke Syd gave a short interview to Sveriges Radio yesterday talking a bit about the sponsorship. Listen to it here.

Jersey of HBK is blue and will have a red Gyllene Tider logo, while red-white Halmia jersey will have a blue logo on the back. Aftonbladet showed a montage of the HBK jersey. It won’t look like this, but you can have a look at how blue and red fits together. Halmia’s jersey you could already see several times on facebook, Roxette Official. ;)

Small Apartments – Behind the scenes with Per Gessle

Jonas Åkerlund shared 3 behind the scenes videos on his website. All 3 videos are full of Gessle vibes. :) The longest – titled as Behind the Scenes – contains a 1-minute-long part with Per Gessle (judging from his hairdo and the shirt he is wearing, this scene was probably shot in February 2012, in Melbourne, Australia). At about 14:26 you can listen to a snippet from Mr. G’s cover version of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother (a pity that Matt Lucas is singing over…). Right after this part Jonas is talking about Per:

He has such a strong sense of melody and … have a weird combination of melancholy and happiness.

Per himself says:

I’m really honoured to be part of this.

The other 2 videos are shorter, but Gessle sound is in there, too. One is with Peter Stormare (A Swedish Haiku), the other is with Johnny Knoxville (How to Build a Gravity Bong).

“Small Apartments” is on its way to Europe

Small Apartments official Facebook page informed that the movie is coming to UK Cinemas on March 22 2013. In reply to the question if the movie will also be available in other European countries they say:

We will have a conversation with Sony about other territories in about 10 days time about other theaters.

As we’ve already informed you about it, US cinema premiere of the movie was at the beginning of February (reaching a limited audience), US DVD release date is 19th February. IMDb informs about the following release dates:

  • Italy: 5th March (DVD premiere)
  • Germany: 1st April (DVD premiere)
  • UK: 1st April (DVD premiere)
  • Sweden: 8th May (DVD premiere)
  • Australia: 12th September

Here are the list of all songs written by Per Gessle and used in the film – more or less different vs. the original version of them:
598423_448618278542146_1019885829_n
- Franklin’s Intro [new]
- I Have a Party in My Head (I Hope It Never Ends)
- Drizzle [new]
- Franklin’s Theme [new]
- Shopping with Mother
- Burned out Heart
- Are You an Old Hippie, Sir?
- Making Love or Expecting Rain
- Waltz for Woody
- C’mon
- Week with Four Thursdays
- Something in the System
- Warm. Again. [new, English version of 'Varmt igen']
- Speedboat to Cuba
- Late, Later on
- Something Happened Today
- Double-headed Elvis

We assume one of the the new songs is a renamed “Kurt – The Fastest Plumber in the West” tune. The soundtrack should also include 7 additional songs, including one performed by Per Gessle – a cover of “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”. Big thank you to Alejandro Lerin for sharing this news.

According to The Daily Roxette, “Dixi” is also included in the project and the soundtrack will be available on Elevator Entertainment vinyl, CD and digital download.

Hopefully, Per Gessle’s “soon” he wrote on 13th February on Facebook – regarding when the soundtrack is out – is much sooner than his “very soon” he mentioned in December, 2012. ;)

Marie is also busy working in the studio

Mr G seems to be too busy with his Gyllene Tider project to post these news on Roxette Official, but from this roxette.se message we can see Marie is also busy working in the studio, which is great news. So far we heard rumours regarding her project, but this is the first official news about the fact that she’s preparing something for us THIS YEAR. :)

2013-02-12

Hello all Roxers out there!

Marie and I are taking some time off from Roxette at the moment after this huge world tour and two new albums in 19 months!!! Phew!

I’m in Christoffer’s farmhouse recording a new Gyllene Tider-LP (yep, that’s what we do!). It should be out in the open later this spring 2013. Marie is also busy working in the studio making magic moments to be revealed later this year!

However, we’re slowly but surely preparing a bright Roxette future with a live BluRay/DVD as well as tour documentary coming out before you know it!
We hope you want to stay in touch and communicate with us via our Facebook-page; Roxette Official.
I’ll try to post new and interesting stuff for your hungry hearts almost every day! See y’all soon.

Lots of love from Per (& Marie).

Sooo, it seems that the gap on the schedule of what to expect in 2013 will be filled with some Ms Effe project. ;)

#gtsommar Fritzon is looking forward to his summer job

An article is published by Hallandsposten. They had an interview with Göran. Don’t miss it if you want to know a bit more about the Farfisa guru. ;)

 ©Roger Larsson

Here’s a short summary:

Fritzon is looking forward to his summer job

Hallandsposten’s article says Göran Fritzon is looking forward to his summer job. The other members of Gyllene Tider are working more or less with music in their everyday lives, but Göran has not played regularly with any artist or band for the past 20 years. He’s usually playing only for himself at home, in Oskarström during the weekends.

Göran grew up in Åled and began to play the organ at the age of 12. He doesn’t really know why he chose that instrument. But – as he says to Hallandsposten – they had an old pump organ at home and his mom told that as a child, he used to stand on the pedals and raising his hands to the keys, which he was too short to see.

The sound of my organ, model VIP 233, is unique. I also have a bit bigger Farfisa organ, but it does not sound the same.

Hallandsposten informs that he started working as a scanner operator in 1986, but continued to play in various formations, until he got tired in 1993-94. He had children and worked full time, so he could not be rushing around anymore. Later he had his own business with a friend, Dynamit, a firm for graphic production. Currently he is employed by Hylte as a project manager. Additionally, he works with Tågdagarna in Landeryd.

Regarding 2004 GT25 tour Göran says:

The greatest of all was Ullevi with almost 60,000 people in the audience. There’s a scene on the DVD “GT25 Live” where I forget to play and just stand and look over the arena.

He says they’ve been talking about Gyllene Tider’s comeback for a few years but had to wait until this summer, because it went so well for Per Gessle and Roxette on their world tour. GT performed three songs at the Roxette concert in Halmstad in 2010, but otherwise it’s nine years since Göran was on stage.

Regarding this summer Göran says:

It will be great fun. It just feels like “wow!”.

Sure, I may be a little rusty, but I tend to quickly get started. We have so much fun together and I feel a great sense of security with the rest of the band.

It is the world’s most fun summer job.

Interview with Favela team: We are happy with the result

FavelaDo you remember when we asked you to send us your questions to the Favela production team responsible for the latest Roxette documentary and concert? So here’s the outcome…

About Favela:

Most of the fans haven’t heard about you until you started working with Roxette, however, Favela was founded in 2008. We know you have done a live broadcast from Kent’s release party in New York. Have you done any productions for other artists before? If yes, which ones?
We are a relatively small production company which works very widely but has a passion for music. Except the Kent production that you mentioned, music wise we have produced/directed for Sissel Kyrkjebö: Live at Dalhalla, Hellacopters: Live at Debaser, Glasvegas – “Shine like Stars”, Madrugada: Live at Spektrum Oslo. We have as well done live productions at Way Out West and Where the action is with Swedish artists such as The Hives and Mando Diao as well as international acts as Foo Fighters, Queens of Stoneage, Dirty Pretty Things and many more.

About working together with Roxette:

How did your cooperation with Roxette start? We know you were also responsible for two Roxette videos: “Way out” and “Speak to me”. Is this correct?
It all began with Mattias Holmer, now producer at Favela. He filmed Per Gessle’s Party Crasher Tour at Cirkus in Stockholm 2009. The idea started in his head the day Marie walked on stage. We started to talk about the project in the beginning of 2010. After that we have done the videos for “Way out” (partly shot during sound-check in South Africa) and “Speak to me” and two electronical press kits – for the Charm School and Travelling albums.

#gtsommar Second concert in Halmstad on Aug 7

Though we have expected this to be announced since Saturday due to the Coop leak, we were still suprised with the new date for the second Gyllene Tider Halmstad concert. It won’t happen on July 6, day after tour’s premiere as we previously thought, but a month later on August 7 between Örnsköldsvik and Skövde gigs. Probably a good comment for them not playing three gigs in a row would be “hey, they’re not 50 anymore” ;-)

Tickets will go on sale tomorrow, January 31 at 9:00 am CET at Ticnet.se. It makes the tour longer a little bit longer and bigger with 19 dates announced (so far).
