Gyllene Tider – Hux Flux – Ronneby – 22nd July 2023 – #10

Hard to believe it, but we are already at halftime of the tour. 10 gigs done, 10 to come. If you haven’t seen any shows yet on the Hux Flux tour, do yourself a favour and get a ticket to at least one of the remaining concerts. You’ll never regret it!

Gyllene Tider met an extremely loud crowd in Ronneby last night. I wouldn’t be able to pick one song that worked the best here, because being it a ballad or an uptempo song, the band gave their full power and the audience sang along all the time and the clapping was continuous too.

During the day, there were some rainy periods and also during Uno’s support act session it started raining. Before GT got on stage there was even rainbow. Ser du sol är du solens vän / Ser du regn ser du regnbågen. We are very lucky so far, because the rain avoided all shows.

Well, Billy had a day off, but part of the security team was the same as in Kalmar, so a little dancing and sing-along from their side was guaranteed too.

During the ginger tea talking, Per said it’s a mix Micke Syd prepares for him before every gig. Micke said he got some help from Dea’s friend now. Dea is from Bräkne-Hoby (close to Ronneby) and his friend provided Micke with a brew that is used at Sweden Rock Festival when the hard rock gangs are too tired and need some kick. So a long night is waiting for PG, Micke said. Dea was laughing and shaking her head all the time.

Before Tuffa tider, Per said the ukulele is the world’s sexiest instrument and if in winter you are on Costa del Sol, you can see Micke Syd playing ukulele there. He is playing Här kommer alla känslorna mainly. Micke said it works very fine with old Spanish ladies, they melt like butter when he plays this song. Per asked him if a video could be found on YouTube. Haha.

During the band presentation, Dea got an extra loud applause and cheering, since she is from the neighbourhood, but Malin-My from the North and all the guys got a loud cheering too, of course. After Per introduced Micke, they hi-fived and Per waved to Peter. He came up on stage. They probably discussed some issues with the in-ear system again, but this time there were no strange moves and I assume there were less problems with the cables. In the meantime, Micke said you always save the best for last when it comes to Christmas presents and all that. So he introduced Mr. G as the man with many beautiful, colorful guitars, a sports car fan and even a car dealer.

Before Min tjej och jag, Micke asked how many were not even born in 1981. Some raised their hands, so Micke said they can find this song on Spotify. Micke’s wife, Helena was standing in front of the stage, filming him. Micke said his tjej is here tonight, so he dedicated and sang the song to her, interacting a lot with her while singing.

PG thanked the crowd for coming. He wished everyone a further nice summer without rain and said he hopes we meet again and everyone takes care of each other.

Next stop is Piteå on Wednesday.

Gyllene Tider – Hux Flux – Kalmar – 21st July 2023 – #9

Kalmar! Last night’s show became one of the Top3 gigs so far on this tour. Fab mood on stage, loud sing-along crowd. What else could you ask for? Billy? Yes! He is back too!

It’s always nice to have a fun security team at the concerts. The security guys in Kalmar certainly belong to that group. Dancing and singing along, enjoying life while working. Love that! It’s also lovely to see Åsa still enjoying all GT songs and dancing along while filming what’s happening on stage.

There must be something new in the process of fixing Per’s in-ear system, because last night he had some problems with it again. From the first song you could see it was uncomfortable for him how it was fixed on his back. New tape? New cable? Or just a new person fixing it? Whatever. Change back to the procedure you used until 2 gigs before, haha.

The ginger tea mix Micke Syd prepared for PG last night tasted like lakrits according to Mr. G. Haha.

When Per started talking about the „tribute to their favourite Dutch band” and he said we might be wondering what that band could be, some in the front row spoiled the fun with shouting „Shocking Blue”. Per ignored it, but Micke Syd said „there are some who saw more than one show on this tour”. Haha. Per also laughed and he went on according to his usual script mentioning Focus and Ekseption. He said he saw Ekseption in 1973, but it wasn’t his thing. He said Anders was 12 and he saw them too, from the front row. Anders corrected him by saying he wasn’t there, because he was on a curfew, sorry. Micke Syd’s George Baker Selection moment ended up in a loud „ojojoj ojojojoj” after a little „una paloma blanca”. Sounded cool! Micke Syd appreciated it with a „boom shaka laka”. Haha. Then Per said they got hooked on a band called Shocking Blue, the ones in the front were right, he pointed at them, so his translation of Send Me A Postcard got played.

Before Flickan i en Cole Porter-sång, Micke N-S brought the checkered blue and black acoustic guitar on stage, but Per walked off stage to the left side and asked technician Peter Fredriksson from the crew to do something with his in-ear system. Peter tried his best, but later we could see nothing had changed. When Per came back after a few seconds, the audience cheered him and he told us he had problems with the cables on his back. Micke N-S was sitting in front of the drums until then. He hopped up when Per got back on stage, but since he started to talk, Micke sat back. Then PG waved to him that he could bring the guitar.

Before Tuffa tider, Per said the ukulele is the world’s sexiest instrument and if in winter you are on Costa del Sol, you can see Micke Syd playing ukulele there. He is playing Gyllene Tider hits and Freestyle and Lili & Susie songs. Micke Syd laughed and said Här kommer alla känslorna works damn good in Marbella.

During the band presentation, after saying that Anders is the band’s best soccer player and Micke Syd is their wonderful drummer, Per thought he would have enough time to go off stage again to have the in-ear system cables fixed. He seemed to forget that Micke would introduce him too. Peter was trying to fix the problem again. Micke Syd went on with introducing PG, the best saved for last. „The one who plays ukulele, who is interested in driving cars and cars in general, the one who took a break again…, where is he? The magical Per Håkan Gessle!” PG rushed back on stage. Micke Syd said Per already had 2 pit stops on this gig, which is a new record that deserves a big applause. He got the tires changed, the oil level checked and the in-ear system taped. Haha.

Before Min tjej och jag, Micke said that at the rehearsals they tried the trick with Göran, that he was jumping on Micke Syd’s back how they did that in the Parkliv movie, but it doesn’t work anymore. Haha.

When the band went off stage before both encores, the audience was clapping and screaming loudly. This time, as I mentioned at the beginning, Billy found his way back to the setlist and was performed as the first song in the first encore. Welcome back! Please, stay forever!

Before the second encore, the crowd started singing Sommartider, of course. When the gang came back on stage, Per said they thought they would skip this song. „We play this one instead!” När vi två blir en got a loud cheering from the audience and an even bigger party came when finally Sommartider was on.

PG thanked the crowd for a fab evening, wished everyone a fantastic summer and said he hopes we meet again and everyone takes care of each other.

Next stop is Ronneby on Saturday.

Gyllene Tider – Hux Flux – Skövde – 19th July 2023 – #8

The welcoming sign to Skövde was a Gyllene Tider LED screen with their old pic from the ’80s. There were also quite some posters in town to promote the event at Boulognerskogen. The band played here in 2019 too and that was a rainy show. This time there was no rain, but it was windy. So windy that for Uno Svenningsson’s session the technicians tried to set up the backdrop, but it was moving too much, so they decided to take it off.

Uno started at 20:00 and GT got on stage at 21:15. The LED wall was back after Lysekil and also the sidedrops were used, as well as the Hux Flux sign on top of the stage.

Because of the cold, ginger tea was brought to Per more times than usual. The mix Micke Syd prepares for PG each night tasted as strawberry again, Per said. It was a Töreboda special, Micke Syd said. While they were talking about this, Micke N-S, who already brought Per his next guitar, sat down in front of the drums and waited until Mr. G finished his talking.

Windy gigs mean plectrum-licking gigs. Haha. Both Per and Anders licked their picks several times, to make them stick to their fingers while playing. Regarding Per’s in-ear system, of which the cable is fixed on his back, something was wrong or at least uncomfortable. He was touching it on his neck many times and made some funny moves.

Before Tuffa tider, Per said the ukulele is the world’s sexiest instrument and if in winter you are on Costa del Sol, you might bump into Micke Syd playing ukulele there. Micke Syd said yes, he plays „una paloma blanca” and some GT hits. They sound very good in Spain.

When the band presentation started, Micke Syd disappeared for a little time – you’ll read it later, why – and Per started with the two fantasic ladies, who are singing divinely. Then came Halmstad’s own boogie king, MP. No party without Göran, PG said. When introducing Anders, he only said „Anders Herrlin on bass”, but Micke Syd added „he’s damn handsome”. Anders reacted with an „eh” in the mic. Micke Syd was introduced as GT’s spine and Micke introduced Per as the man, the myth, the legend and sports car fan. Haha.

Before Min tjej och jag, Micke said he would hang out in the front a bit more. He would sing a song. Per wrote it for him to sing in 1981 and back then Micke asked PG if it was something like the Yellow Submarine with Ringo. Ehm. Haha. Here it turned out why Micke disappeared. He opened his jacket and showed his T-shirt with a picture of him and his wife, Helena. He said they would have their 18th wedding anniversary tomorrow, so he dedicated the song to her. How sweet! Happy anniversary! After MTOJ – as Micke Syd usually does during the past few concerts – he threw the mic to his technician, Albin, who caught it.

After the gang went off stage, the audience was clapping and screaming „en gång till”. Before the first encore, BoJo came up on stage and while standing on the side, he was checking if the crowd was loud enough. He put his hand to his ear to listen, so the crowd got louder. Haha. Unfortunately, it seems that Billy is on sick leave, so he didn’t appear in the first encore. We hope he gets well soon and will shine on stage again one of these days.

Before the second encore, the crowd started singing Sommartider. When the guys and girls came back on stage and the audience was still singing Sommartider, Per said they thought they would skip this song. Haha. „We play this one instead!” And they played När vi två blir en, which I think was the highlight of the gig. The audience got into it very much, singing along loudly.

PG thanked for a fantastic evening and said he hopes the audience had as much fun as they did. He wished everyone a fantastic summer and said he hopes we meet again and everyone takes care of each other.

Next stop is Kalmar on Friday.

Amazing Wednesday in Skövde. Thx for stopping by and singing along!!!!

Gyllene Tider – Hux Flux – Lysekil – 17th July 2023 – #7

The last time Gyllene Tider played in Lysekil was exactly 4 years ago, on 17th July.

During the day, Micke Syd posted about a patisserie and bakery where they prepared Hux Flux cakes for the day, with the album sleeve as the decoration on top. So we thought we would check it out. It was very delicious. After leaving Björsells Bageri & Konditori, we got mail from Live Nation. It was about changing the schedule for the evening. Probably, because of the heavy wind. So the doors would open at 17:30, Uno on stage at 19:00 and GT on stage at 20:00.

When we arrived at the venue, we could see from afar that the side drops were missing on stage and the Hux Flux sign was not placed on top of the stage, but Hux on one side and Flux on the other. We realized it only inside that the LED wall was completely missing and the cameras too, since there was no screen to show the cam recordings on. We felt sorry for Göran and Micke, because the black backdrop on stage was rolled up behind their spots. So it was even more windy for them during the concert.

The show started with the music they usually play while the cartoon is shown, but now of course, without the cartoon itself. The guys and girls just entered the stage towards the end of this music.

Since Uno played one song less vs. his usual setlist, we were afraid that maybe the GT setlist gets shorter too, but it didn’t change vs. Eskilstuna, which means they didn’t play Billy, but all other songs remained stable on the list. Hopefully, Billy is not away for the rest of the tour.

After greeting the crowd, Per said they had many great shows in Lysekil over the years, but they try to top them tonight despite the wind.

After Gammal kärlek rostar aldrig, PG picked up his mug of ginger tea. The mix Micke Syd prepared for him tonight felt a bit minty.

Before Tuffa tider, Per said ukulele is the world’s sexiest instrument. He said if you go to Marbella during winter, you can easily find Micke Syd in a park playing ukulele. Micke said „the world’s sexiest instrument played by the world’s almost most unsexy guy, sounds like a success”.

The band presentation was for their ego’s sake, Per said. Haha. Everyone got a very loud round of applause and Micke even got a loud „Micke, Micke, Micke” from the audience. Micke Syd said Per promised he would go waterskiing, if the weather was good in Lysekil, but…, we will see him doing that tomorrow. Haha.

Before Min tjej och jag, Micke asked the ones sitting far behind on the rocks (outside the venue „are you with us?” They waved. The song was dedicated to Anna from Björsells Bageri & Konditori, for the love of cakes.

Both times the guys and girls went off stage, the audience was clapping and started singing Sommartider and screamed „en gång till”. They were still singing Sommartider when the whole gang was on stage again. After Sommartider, PG thanked everyone for coming despite the wind and wished everyone a fantastic summer and said he hopes we meet again. „Take care of each other!”

Despite the heavy wind, the band was in top shape and the audience was singing along a lot. Especially Kung av sand and Flickan i en Cole Porter-sång were very loud.

I have to say it didn’t really matter that the LED wall wasn’t there. This way we could focus even more on what was happening on stage and you could see that real music and a band on fire needs no other stuff, just their instruments and voices. Amazing show!

Next stop is Skövde on Wednesday.

Per after the show:

Så många fantastiska konserter har GT gjort i Lysekil genom åren och ikväll tror jag bestämt att vi toppade dem alla! Fantastisk publik + grymt samspelt band trots jobbiga förhållanden med kastvindar och annat opoppigt!!!! Tack för allsången, tack för att ni kom förbi! Love you all!!!

Per Gessle interview in Västra Nyland

Before Gyllene Tider perform in Ekenäs, Finland, Kjell Ekholm from Västra Nyland did an interview with Per Gessle. Kjell met Per in his Stockholm office on Strandvägen.

As Kjell says, Per is a music addict. He has lived and breathed music since he was a child. In addition, he is the only artist who has managed to keep three different careers going at the same time and succeeded in all of them.

Together with Marie Fredriksson, Roxette became bigger than ABBA themselves in the US. The duo managed to get a total of four songs to the No. 1 position on Billboard Hot 100 and over the years, as a solo artist, he has given us many immortal pop classics in Swedish. Now Per Gessle is coming to Finland and Ekenäs for the first time with Gyllene Tider.

According to Kjell, it’s always fun interviewing Per, because he is still so enthusiastic when talking about pop music. Already as a child, Per was able to experience various forms of creation via his mother. She wrote a fairy tale about Ferdinand the ant for him and made her own illustrations for it. As an 11-year-old, he started writing his own songs, but without music.

I have always liked to express myself and when I started school, I also liked to write essays. I created pop music first through lyrics, because I could not yet play an instrument.

He tried to translate songs by David Bowie and Leonard Cohen. He admits that the result would hardly stand the light of day today. But the fact is that Gyllene Tider got their first record deal largely thanks to Gessle’s lyrics.

Per Gessle has always been obsessed with pop music. He says himself that it has meant everything to him since childhood. He and his older brother bought a lot of records, by the time he was ten, he had 100 LPs, while his friends owned five at best.

He earned money for the records by handing out newspapers. Sometimes he managed to get the records a little cheaper when he bought them from his brother’s friends, who needed money for cigarettes. That’s how he came across Lovin’ Spoonful’s album and Los Bravo’s single Black Is Black. But he didn’t just invest in records.

When I was ten, I started buying the English music magazines Melody Maker and later, when punk came along, also New Musical Express. I actually still have those magazines.

20 years ago, Per Gessle coined the expression that a new song must be better than the previous one. Kjell is curious if he still thinks that way today.

Oh no, that no longer applies. I was talking to my wife the other day and stated that if I were to stop making music now, I could probably feel quite satisfied with the songs I’ve written.

I am in the same situation as, for example, Bryan Adams and Tears for Fears. I’m simply not what you could call mainstream anymore. Pop music must always reflect its own time. When I was a child in the ‘60s, the entire youth culture was dominant. It influenced visual arts, film, theatre and clothing. Everything belonged together.

In today’s digital era everything is controlled from our phones and laptops and you notice that in music too. All the music on the charts today sounds the same. There is no place for madmen like Brian Wilson, David Bowie and Frank Zappa. Other artists, who are the same age as me, like Belinda Carlisle and The Bangles, have fallen into the classic “vintage guys and girls” category. We represent a different era.

When Per was 16, he received a Spanish guitar as a gift from his mother and when he learned the basics, things quickly progressed. After school, he was unemployed like so many other young people in Sweden. Quite surprisingly, he and a friend got employed as troubadours at the county council in Halmstad. They went around to nursing homes and hospitals and played and sang. Gessle says it was a great school for him to play at four locations a day and entertain the patients and the elderly.

It was a success and their contract was extended to six months. The repertoire was a blissful mix of Drömmen om Elin, Svarte Rudolf and Streets Of London, but they could also throw in the occasional CCR classic.

He laughs when he suddenly remembers a special event in the long-term care ward at the hospital in Halmstad. They had never played there before and when they arrived, there was no one to receive them. They went in, took out their guitars and started playing. They thought it was a little strange, because in the great hall there were only two beds, and the people in them did not take much notice of the young troubadours.

We settled down and played “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. At the same time, a nurse arrives and asks what we are doing there. At the same moment, one of the patients sits up in bed and looks at us. The nurse is completely shocked. It turned out that we had come to the wrong place and in this room there were two patients who had been in a coma for a long time.

The nurse lost her temper, the troubadours quickly scurried out of the room and a whole medical team came in to confirm that a small miracle had happened to that patient.

It was fate that wanted us to be there and this is a proof of the strength there is in music.

When Gyllene Tider started their career, the whole band went to London to buy guitars. In a guitar shop far outside the city, Per bought a burgundy Gibson Les Paul Custom. It was a similar one that Ray Davies had in The Kinks.

They also bought amplifiers, which they had shipped to Sweden, but they wanted to take the guitars home as hand luggage. When they arrived in Sweden, they had no money left and tried to smuggle the guitars in without paying customs.

Of course we were caught for it and customs seized all our new instruments. We were completely devastated. When I got home, I wrote an emotional letter to customs and explained that we had no money left and that we were still young and ignorant. They were human and we got the guitars back, but I was fined 2000 SEK, which was a lot of money at the time.

Today, the financial situation for Per Gessle looks different. He is a partner in eleven companies and has built up a fortune and millions of assets. His music business is divided between three companies, of which he is also chairman of the board. Together, they have assets of over 30 million euros.

In addition, he is a partner in Tylösands Havsbad and Tylösands Kompaniet Aktiebolag, which are estimated to be worth over 50 million euros.

He has a passion for cars and owns 15 exclusive cars from brands such as Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and McLaren. His favourite car is a Ferrari Dino from 1972. His interest in cars had been awakened when he saw the pictures of John Lennon’s psychedelic painted Rolls-Royce as a child. Then he had to settle for collecting Corgi Toys toy cars and building car tracks with his older brother.

The guys discuss the beginnings of Gyllene Tider and the early songwriting. Kjell claims that the style he had then was a combination of The Beatles’ melodic loops and the energy of new wave music. Per agrees, adding that he always liked bands that could combine good melodies with energy, like the Ramones and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The latter became the house gods of the entire band.

I’ve always had lousy self-confidence when it comes to my music and especially my voice. I’ve always hated my singing voice. What punk and new wave music did for me was that I realized that you didn’t have to be very good. I felt safer when I heard that everyone else also had faults and shortcomings.

If you have a band that is not super competent, there is often more energy and adrenaline in the playing than technical quality. I still like that today. For example, I never liked Mariah Carey’s singing style. That’s the expression I want in the singing and playing.

Kjell is curious what the secret is behind Gyllene Tider’s success.

There is something strange that happens when we play together. I know I sing differently when I play with these guys. There is some DNA molecule in all of us that is activated when we play together. It’s impossible to explain, but it feels absolutely magical. Age and experience certainly play a role as well. We now have a film in the works and then we have gone through old memories and it is a wonderful journey we have made together.

Kjell says the guys will probably never say it again that they are quitting.

No, I didn’t like it either when we said in 2019 that now we are saying goodbye. It was our drummer, Micke “Syd” Andersson who thought we should finish with the flag at the top as long as everyone was alive and well.

Over the years, I have learned that it’s not good to paint yourself into a corner. I remember an American lawyer I hired once upon a time used to say, “my preliminary opinion is”. Then you can always change your mind. Then came the corona pandemic and nothing was the same anymore. In addition, we made a new record and therefore it felt good to go on tour again.
