The band had a day off after Berlin and visited Hamburg to perform the 9th show on the autumn leg. 9 shows down, 9 gigs still to come.
There was no support act in Hamburg either, so after the doors opened at 18:00, the band went on stage at 20:00. Barclays Arena is quite a large venue and it had a standing area in front of the stage and seats on two floors, at some point even on three floors. The concert wasn’t sold out, but the arena was well packed.
Per used his German several times during the gig and Lena also talked a bit in German saying „Mir geht’s super!”.
Before performing Vulnerable, Per said they started playing this song on this tour. He doesn’t know why, he probably has just forgotten about it. „Or maybe it’s really bad.” The audience was laughing. Lena said she loves it and we shouted „we too!” Haha.
The band presentation turned out to be very special. Since it was Clarence’s birthday, we thought it would be nice to wish him happy birthday, so we printed some Grattis signs to hold up when Per introduced Clarence. First it was Magnus to be introduced. He said they were in Hamburg already on Friday and they went to Gretel & Alfons, which he thinks is the best bar. Then Per turned to Clarence and we held up our signs. Clarence saw them and thanked for it. Then he started playing the tunes of Neverending Love, because Mr. G is hard to get distracted, he kept saying his usual intro speech. Then finally Per said: „to make things even more special, today it’s his birthday!”. We cheered for Clarence, the band started playing Happy Birthday To You and the audience was singing. Per said „beautiful! He is turning 28”. Haha. Then PG introduced Dea and Jonas and then came Norpan, the new kid on the block. Per went on: „and to make things a little bit more special, it was his birthday yesterday”. So we held up our signs again and started singing Happy Birthday To You to Norpan too. Per said he is also 28. Then Chris played HSV Hamburg die wunderschöne Stadt as the intro to Joyride, but the crowd didn’t really seem to recognize it, so Chris even sang a line into the mic. After the show we found out that Hamburg SV played a match at the same time as the concert was on, so probably all soccer fans went to see the match instead of the gig. Haha. The team lost to Augsburg though. They all should have come to the concert instead.
The whole show was amazing – even if the sound wasn’t the best – the audience sing-along was fabulous and the energy and fun on stage was fantastic! What an awesome Saturday night! So soundwise it’s still Berlin that was the best show so far on this tour leg, but otherwise this gig has just jumped to the No. 2 spot (after No. 1 Valencia) on my list. Sorry, Copenhagen. Haha.
