Interview with Per Gessle and Lena Philipsson about the Roxette In Concert tour in Blikk, Hungary

Blikk did an interview with Per and Lena on Friday via Zoom. The Roxette In Concert tour’s first autumn show will happen in Budapest on 4th November.

Blikk: – The return of Roxette surprised everyone. Why did you feel like you had to continue with the band?

Per Gessle: – For many, many years I couldn’t decide what to do with Roxette, so this is a really big step for me. Then a few years ago I realized that I was a little sad that I couldn’t perform the songs that I had written for Roxette over the course of three decades. I tried to find a way to continue, but I didn’t really know what to do. In 2024 I made a Swedish album with Lena on it. When we worked together in the studio, I realized that she had the ability and the knowledge to sing Roxette songs. I just felt that out of all the people I had met so far, she was the first one who could really do it. I thought about it for a while, and then I met Lena and I presented my idea to her, which made her completely pale of course. But then we just tried it. We rehearsed some acoustic songs with some of the members of Roxette and they sounded great. Lena was a really good choice, she sings these songs just amazingly.

Blikk: – Lena, what was your first thought when Per asked you to join this project? It’s quite a challenge to step into Marie’s shoes.

Lena Philipsson: – It’s definitely a challenge. And it’s not that easy, because I know that when I go on stage, I’m not the person people really want to see. They want to see Marie, but unfortunately she’s not with us anymore. So someone else has to sing the songs, and that someone is me. In that sense, it’s a bit complicated. At the same time, Per’s request was flattering, almost impossible to refuse. And then, once I said yes, from then on, I just tried to focus on what I had to do and do my job as best as I could, considering the uniqueness of the situation. I really wanted to keep the original version of the songs as much as possible, so as not to cause any confusion for anyone, because it’s already a big difference to see a different person on stage, who might move differently and look different. It was important to me not to change any of the songs, but to show respect to Marie, Per and the fans by keeping the original. Our South African premiere was of course quite nerve-wracking. I tried to pay attention to the atmosphere in the venue to get a feel for what the band was doing, what we were doing on stage and how the audience was reacting. That’s where I started. But I think the feedback was positive from the very beginning. And from there, everything just got better and better.

Blikk: – We’ve seen other bands continue working with a new singer – most recently with Linkin Park. What do you think is the most important thing for it to work well?

Lena: – I can only speak about our own situation – for me it’s about showing respect for the music. I mean, I try to blend in, because it’s Per’s project, and I try not to take control of it. Just pay attention to the mood and listen to what the flow dictates. I don’t know how to explain it – you just have to be yourself as much as possible, instead of trying to be someone else. Give yourself and be honest in what you do.

Blikk: – Do you remember when the moment came when you felt comfortable in this role?

Lena: – After the second concert, I felt that everything was OK, that it was working. Now I can go out and be myself even more, giving myself more space. So it happened pretty quickly. The band, Per and I were working together for the first time – as musicians, we had to get to know each other on stage. But in terms of the setlist and the things that happened on stage, as we played together, it got better and better. So I think I got used to it pretty quickly.

Blikk: – Which song is the hardest for you to perform together?

Lena: – I would say “Spending My Time”, because it’s just me and Per on stage. He plays the guitar while I sing, which is very stripped down and revealing at the same time – so that’s an important moment. Also, singing “It Must Have Been Love” is very important to do perfectly, but I’ve learned it pretty well. Now I have more favourites: I really like “Listen To Your Heart”, for example, it’s pure joy for me to sing it, and I don’t think of it as complicated anymore. I just want to do a good job. We’re over the difficulties.

Per: – I think the best thing about the whole line-up is that we have a lot of fun and we feel good together on stage. The band members are also very enthusiastic. Lena’s presence and being able to perform the songs again is very inspiring for them. I tried to gather all the key figures from Roxette’s past, like guitarist Jonas Isacsson. Clarence Öfwerman, our producer, is still with us. I think that ultimately it is a tribute to Roxette and its legacy, and for that to happen we have to enjoy what we do. For me that is the most important thing, because if we have fun, the audience will have fun too.

Blikk: – What’s the goal of the project, besides playing old Roxette songs? Are there any plans to write new songs in the future?

Per: – No. I think the point of Roxette is to perform old songs. That’s all we do. By the way, we have made music together before, and maybe we will in the future, but I don’t think we will do it under the name Roxette.

Blikk: – You will also perform in Budapest in November. You just mentioned “Listen To Your Heart” – this is the song that probably every Hungarian knows, because from 1990 onwards a political party in Hungary started using it for its campaign and other events. Sometime around 1992 you said in an interview that you had heard about it. Were you ever worried that people would automatically associate your song with a party, forgetting its original message and content?

Per: – Well, first of all – looking back – I don’t like it when people use songs without permission. In the past, we were not asked about it at all. What happened in Hungary is a very unique situation, I have never experienced anything like this anywhere else. We have always tried to stay away from politics, because we don’t fully understand the countries and their political situation. I think if anyone had asked me if I would license one of my songs to a political party or movement, I would have definitely said no, without taking a stand for the left or the right. Because that’s how I operate and that’s how I work. I think copyright should be respected and the person who owns it or wrote the song should be asked first before they use it. That’s what I think.

Blikk: – There was a case a few years ago –  the same party used your song at a political event, and they even uploaded a video of it on Facebook, but because of copyright, that video was removed. Have you heard about that case?

Per: – I didn’t know about that, but I know that our record label, Warner Music, took legal action against it, because for them it’s the same situation: copyright infringement. You can have any political views, but ultimately it’s about how laws and rights work. As I said, I don’t have any other experience, so I can’t give you any other examples – it’s a unique thing. And I don’t really like being in the middle of things that I didn’t choose.

Blikk: – Let’s get back to the concert. You’ve been touring for a while now, how is the audience reaction?

Per: – We’ve done 25 shows so far, and they’ve been just fantastic. When we started, we were still wondering what happens if it doesn’t work out? On the one hand, what happens if people don’t buy tickets? On the other hand, what happens if they don’t like Marie being replaced by someone else? So many things could have turned out differently, but it turned out the opposite. Even the most dedicated fans have started to get to know Lena, appreciate what she does, and everyone leaves the concerts with a smile on their face. We have a huge catalogue of songs that people have grown up with and that have become part of their everyday lives – I think that’s just amazing, and it’s also a very rare thing. It’s really fantastic that I’ve found a way to carry on Roxette’s songs and that they are accepting it like that.

Blikk: – What message do you think the audience will take away from the fact that Roxette’s legacy lives on?

Per: – I don’t know if there is any specific message. But I’m a songwriter after all – I started writing songs when I was a teenager and I still do that basically today. I feel lucky to have had so much success all over the world in my life, and if my music and lyrics still mean something to so many people globally, that’s really fantastic. I hope that the people who come to our concerts get their reward from us on stage – something that adds value to their lives and that we can be a part of. Some people got married to our songs, some people gave birth to their children, and some people listened to “Joyride” on their way to school. These are just small fragments of some people’s lives, but we are part of them. It’s amazing to see that our music means so much to others.

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Halmstad – 27th July 2025 – #25

The last summer show on the Roxette In Concert 2025 tour happened at Brottet in Halmstad. It was the 25th gig on tour, also sold out.

The support act was Melodic Fluke, just like the previous day, and they played for appr. 30 minutes from 20:00. Roxette took the stage a few minutes after 21:00.

After Sleeping In My Car, Per greeted the crowd and said it was nice to be back. He thinks Brottet is Sweden’s most beautiful venue and it’s always fun to play there. Mr. G also introduced the newest member of the Roxette family, the absolutely incomparable Lena Philipsson. The crowd cheered her loudly.

The setlist was the same as the night before, so the gang stuck to 20 songs.

For the last show, the hardcore fans prepared with two flashmobs. One of them – based on Sandra Knospe’s idea – was to raise our hands in the shape of a heart during It Must Have Been Love. So when Lena dedicated the song to our beloved Marie, we raised our hands and kept them in the air for almost the entire song. At least the first 2 rows in the audience did. Dea noticed the action and she also formed a heart.

During the band presentation, the front part of the audience was preparing for the next flashmob: they were blowing up balloons. It was Basia Konarzewska’s initiative to bring back the balloons for Joyride. Christoffer played Kärleken är evig as the intro to Joyride and it was wonderful to see Per and Lena’s faces, and then the crowd’s sing along reaction was cool too when they recognized what song it was. After the intro, the fans were waving the balloons and released them into the air when it came to the lyric „in a wonderful balloon”. It looked fab! Here you can see videos of it from two different angles (1; 2).

When Per and Lena returned to the stage for the encore, Per thanked the band and their fantastic crew for this tour as it was the last show until autumn. He thanked the support act as well. Then someone from the audience shouted he should thank Lena too, so Lena was laughing and she thanked Per and Per thanked Lena. Then they performed Spending My Time.

For me it’s hard to say which of the last three shows was the best, so I would say the second Gothenburg gig and the two Halmstad shows are in my Top5, along with the best concert in Munich and another amazing gig in Madrid.

The energy during all the shows was wonderful both on and off stage. Hats off to Dea, Clarence, Christoffer, Jonas, Magnus and Norpan for their amazing instrumental and vocal contribution to the Roxette sound! All the love to Lena for accepting the challenge and giving us the opportunity to enjoy all our most beloved Roxette hits live again! She is the newest member of the Roxette family and has earned the love of the South African, Australian and European audiences.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the genius who wrote all these hits and who always has the best sense of what works best with the song catalogue. Mr. G, the driving force behind it all!

And last, but definitely not least, Marie stays with us and is not only remembered during It Must Have Been Love, but her spirit is there throughout the entire show. Pelle is not forgotten either, Norpan keeps his light shining. Marie and Pelle, forever in our hearts!

After the concert we bumped into Valdemar Wahlbeck (who played Per in the Sommartider movie), Ville Löfgren (who played MP) and Moa Bondesson (who played MP’s girlfriend). It was their first Roxette show and they were impressed by it. No surprise!

The party was over at Brottet, but Hotel Tylösand organized a Roxette-themed afterparty at Leif’s Lounge, so most of the fans went to the hotel to join the fiesta. Per and the band together with their guests (with Jonas Åkerlund among them) had a separate summer tour leg closing party, also at Hotel Tylösand, but at Leif’s Terrace. When the band members arrived, we were able to thank them for the wonderful shows and the memories we had made together.

The DJ at Leif’s was a bit hard to convince to play Roxette songs at a Roxette-themed afterparty attended by Roxette fans, but sometimes we managed, so he played The Look, It Must Have Been Love, Neverending Love and Dressed For Success. He inserted some Gyllene Tider songs as well and Ännu doftar kärlek by Marie and Kärleken är evig by Lena in between ABBA songs and songs from the ’90s. Towards the end of the party we asked him to play Sommartider. At first he refused to play it, but then he realized that he couldn’t go against our will. Haha. So the night ended with Sommartider at 3 am. It was lovely to party together, not only at the concert, but also after the show.

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Halmstad – 26th July 2025 – #24

The last two shows on the summer tour leg are two sold-out gigs at Brottet in Halmstad. HERE you can watch a video of how long the queue was before the gates opened. So cool!

The support act was Melodic Fluke and they played for appr. 30 minutes at 20:00. Roxette took the stage a couple of minutes after 21:00.

After Sleeping In My Car, Per greeted the crowd and this time he also took the opportunity to welcome all the international fans in English. After that he couldn’t go on with his talk, because the front row started to sing „Olé, olé, olé, olé, Roxette, Roxette”. It was fun!

Mr. G also introduced the newest member of the Roxette family, the fantastic Lena. The crowd cheered her loudly and shouted her name: „Lena, Lena, Lena!” She said she felt great, „who wouldn’t feel great when in Halmstad.”

The setlist was the same as at the second Gothenburg gig, so Wish I Could Fly stayed in the set.

During the band presentation, all members got cheered loudly by the audience. Jonas played a little bit of Iron Man by Black Sabbath as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. (Thanks for recognizing it, Daniel Rezmann!)

Christoffer played Ljudet av ett annat hjärta as the intro to Joyride.

Before Queen Of Rain, Per thanked the audience for coming and said he hopes they would have a further nice summer and „see you next time! Maybe tomorrow?” Haha. „Take care of each other, it’s a crazy world out there!”

This show is definitely among the best gigs on this tour leg. It couldn’t top Munich, but it was very close to that. The energy on and off stage was incredible! I must say that Lena is always fabulous, but last night it felt like she wanted to do extra justice to the songs in their hometown. She was outstanding! I think it was her most powerful performance in her Roxette history so far.

In the audience there was Mats Olsson, Sven Lindström, Jan-Owe Wikström. Anders Roos was taking photos during the concert.

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Gothenburg – 25th July 2025 – #23

Roxette came back for another sold out show in Gothenburg last night. The support act was Dagny again, but this time she and her band played less than on Wednesday. They entered the stage a couple of minutes before 20:00 and played for appr. 45 minutes. Nice, catchy pop music.

Roxette took the stage a couple of minutes after 21:00. As it turned out since the first Gothenburg gig, the new intro music is the intro of Hylands hörna, a Swedish talk show presented by Lennart Hyland, broadcast between 1962 and 1983.

After Sleeping In My Car, Per greeted the crowd and said it’s nice to see so many people. He told the audience that they had a fantastic evening here on Wednesday, but they plan to top it. Mr. G took the opportunity to welcome all their international friends in English. He got a loud cheering for that from the fans who came from all around the world (Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Australia, Germany, Spain, Greece, Hungary, etc.).

Per also introduced the newest member of the big Roxette family, the fantastic Lena. She said she felt wonderful. „I love Gothenburg and Gothenburg loves me, so I feel great!”

There was one change in the setlist. Wish I Could Fly was added after Crash! Boom! Bang! Thanks for putting it back in the set! (So next time, please add Things Will Never Be The Same as well! Haha.)

I lied, adding WICF was not the only change vs. Wednesday. Another change was that the band presentation got back to its original spot. Haha. After Lena dedicated IMHBL to Marie and they performed the song, Micke N-S came to Per to take away the acoustic guitar and brought him the one he should play on the next song. He emphasized that the next song is How Do You Do!. Per laughed and he started the intro teaser to HDYD.

During the band presentation, all members got cheered loudly by the crowd. Jonas played a bit of Paranoid by Black Sabbath as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. (Thanks, Daniel Rezmann for recognizing it!)

Christoffer played Ljudet av ett annat hjärta as the wild intro to Joyride.

When Per and Lena came back for the encore, Per said now it’s only them two. Lena said: „yeah, only you and me”. Per added: „and 10,000 more”. Haha.

Before they performed Queen Of Rain, Per thanked the audience for coming and wished them a further great summer. „Take care of each other, it’s a crazy world out there!”

All in all, this gig could really top the one on Wednesday. The flow of the show was wonderful, the band was in top top top shape, Lena was awesome and Per was amazing too. He enjoyed the entire concert to the full, you could see his happy face. So lovely! And last, but not least, the Friday crowd was even more in party mood than the Wednesday audience.

Roxette In Concert 2025 – Gothenburg – 23rd July 2025 – #22

Finally, the Roxettes are on home ground and perform four sold out shows in Sweden. The first Gothenburg gig at Trädgårdsföreningen happened last night.

The stage was built one day before showtime and those who were walking around in Trädgårdsföreningen could witness the whole process. It’s always fun to see how these things work and how many people work on all the details.

On concert day, it started raining cats and dogs at 16:00 and it didn’t stop until a bit after we could enter the venue when the gates opened at 18:00.

On the side screens, there was Rox promo before the show started: promo of the autumn leg of the tour, the two Swedish shows in December and Joyride – The Musical in Stockholm in September. These ads looked quite cool on such big screens.

At the merch stands you could buy T-shirts, hoodies, caps and bags, as well as CDs.

The support act, Dagny – Norwegian singer and songwriter – entered the stage with her band at 19:45 and played for one hour. They sounded very good.

Roxette took the stage at 21:15 and the audience was cheering them loudly, while a new intro was playing during the band’s entrance. The setlist started with The Big L., as usual, and after Sleeping In My Car Per greeted the crowd and introduced Lena as the new member of Roxette. The audience cheered her loudly and Lena enjoyed it a lot, being on home ground.

After Fading Like A Flower, Per seemed to have some technical problem with his in-ear system and went to the side to technician Peter Fredriksson. Even Micke N-S walked to them with the guitars in his hands to see what the problem was. Then Per walked back to his mic while Peter was walking behind him trying to sort things out. Later Per still showed the guys that something was not working properly for him, but anyway, how they were playing and soundwise, we couldn’t recognize anything strange.

There was one point, when I thought it might have distracted him and it was when after It Must Have Been Love PG started the band presentation. It is usually How Do You Do! that comes after IMHBL, but now Mr. G was a bit too early with introducing the band. You could see the confusion on Jonas’s and Clarence’s face, then Micke N-S also came on stage to check what was happening. Well, what can you do? Haha. Chris played När vi två blir en which should have been the intro to Joyride, but this time it was followed by How Do You Do! When Per realized he had changed the order, he first talked to Magnus on stage, then he went to Chris before Chris finished the intro, probably telling him that they would continue with HDYD, so that he wouldn’t start playing Joyride. The setlist had a different flow this way, but I doubt anyone other than the hardcore fans (and of course the band and technicians) realized something was not going as planned. All were professionals and they made this change as smooth as possible. Next time everything will be back in the right order, for sure.

I must mention that the crowd’s – at least the front rows – sing-along to Clarence’s Neverending Love insert during the band presentation was fantastic! Even Per let us sing longer than usual. Haha. Maybe one day the complete song gets on the list.

During band presentation, Jonas played a little bit of Black Sabbath (Iron Man) as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. (Thanks for recognizing it, Daniel Rezmann!)

The setlist was 2 songs longer than the festival shows, so the band played 19 hits. It was the first time for me that I had the chance to hear Vulnerable live. I just L.O.V.E. this song! Per was singing it and Lena and Dea joined him in the front and sang their parts. It sounded fab! Then they performed Milk And Toast And Honey. It was lovely to have these two ballads back on the setlist. The last time they played them was in Australia.

Unfortunately, What’s She Like? and Things Will Never Be The Same or Wish I Could Fly were not included, but hopefully, they are back a bit later. Fortunately, Almost Unreal stayed in the set.

The loudest sing along we experienced was during It Must Have Been Love, which of course Lena dedicated to Marie.

Before Queen Of Rain, Per thanked the audience for coming and said he hopes they would have a further nice summer and „see you next time! Maybe on Friday!” Haha.

  8. Milk And Toast And Honey
  9. Almost Unreal

Per after the show:

Amazing start of the Swedish tour in Gothenburg. Had a blast! Sold out (10000). We = happy! Thx for stopping by, dear you! New balls on Friday. Same place, same time.

Lena after the gig:

What a wonderful evening in Gothenburg!! So much fun!! Thanks to everyone who was there!
