A drink with Jonas Isacsson

Bild 169When I decided to meet Jonas Isacsson, my story about him was already written – in my head. Back then I didn’t know that it would take me another seven months to finish this text. Why? Just because some bad things happened, I didn’t have spare time to write it, my iPhone crashed and didn’t let me play the recording of the interview – and most of all I wanted to do it right, it was meant to be perfect. But in the meantime I realized that there’s no way to write a perfect article about a guy who deserves it. The more I try, the less it works. I am, however, happy now that I finally made it. Please be gentle about my English. I did it all alone, I am not a native speaker and tried my best.

My wish to meet Jonas again and write a story about him came two years ago. When I finally got the chance to really meet and talk to him, I was more than happy. Finally, I would make it to Stockholm and could go for a beer with him. Why I wanted to meet Jonas? When we – Judith and I – interviewed him for Roxetteblog the very first time (November 2009, during Night Of The Proms), I had the feeling he has a lot of stories to tell, a lot of experiences to share. When we had met for the interview, we sat more than 2 hours talking to him and we could have gone another 2 hours if he had had the time. I, however, thought that not the complete story has been told. Some months and years later I really missed him during the Roxette tour, although Christoffer Lundquist did a tremendous job. When I saw Christoffer running across the stage, hitting his guitar and making people in the audience go crazy with his acting and watching, I thought about Jonas again and the feeling I had. I thought that he is just a compeletely different guy on stage. Calm, quiet, shy, withdrawn – whatever you may call it. It fascinated me that a guy can be so lost (in a positive way) in playing the guitar on stage that you can even hear it. Every tone sounds like you feel what he wants to tell with it, every break he makes means exactly that: to be silent for a very short moment.

So, after our first interview I was really eager to talk to him again; just to hear what else he has to tell.
We meet in August 2013 again. It is a sunny day in Stockholm. It is the day of the “Tack för musiken” recording with Marie Fredriksson and it feels like a perfect day to talk about his career, life and thoughts about this and that. It is warm enough to sit outside and drink a beer – and so we do. I wanted Jonas to choose the location and he came up with a small diner in Södermalm. I ask him why he chose this location. “Because it’s so lovely and a nice location to sit outside. Many of my friends live here or around the corner.” I have a look around and notice he chose a vegetarian diner. Asked about that he says that he himself isn’t a vegetarian, but many of his friends are, but that he still loves the food. “I don’t eat that much meat actually, more fish and seafood. But this here is good food. You should try it. Although, I think they are a bit modest with spice. You should bring your own spice.” He thinks a lot before he speaks, he seems a bit nervous but still happy that we meet.

When I had passed the diner earlier I noticed a lot of drug addicts. “It’s nice anyway”, Jonas says about Södermalm after I mentioned the drug thing. “More people are around, it’s not that snobby here.” Of course, I want to know where in Stockholm it is snobby. “Östermalm. Old ladies with dogs out there and so on.” He laughs. We look around and think about Södermalm again. I read somehwere that Södermalm is the one place in Stockholm, where everyone wants to live and work. “It wasn’t like that 20 years ago”, Jonas says. He thinks again. “Pelle lives here. Pelle Alsing. I haven’t seen him in a while. I miss him.” I don’t know what to say in this moment and try to switch the topic.

According to some fans who were at this concert, Marie and the band were amazing again and Marie’s vocals were incredible.

She also talked quite a lot, even some English words found it’s place. When Marie was telling that they would play many of her old songs, ‘of course’.

This time what was so so was the audience. The few fans didn’t manage this time to inspire the Swedes to stand up and have fun. Just a tip to those fans who may feel weird standing up with everybody else next to you sitting. Just do it!

As you may have read, snow has arrived to the center/northern part of Sweden, but a few fans decided to wait for Marie despite the cold. And they were lucky! Marie stopped by and chatted for some minutes with them.

Next concert is on Friday in Halmstad. Get ready to make lots of noise!

What a blast we had today! Again!
The audience (the front rows may be to blame…) stood up already with the first chords of Kom vila hos mig and that was the beginning of the big party!
There were many international fans this time, probably the concert with most of us so far. And all our clapping and smiles were returned to us with a huge wave of fun and amazing music and singing from Marie and the band which blown us completely away.
There were some amazing guitar solos by Chris and Jokke and some great bass groovy parts as well. Micke couldn’t stay seated all the time and Pelle had fun as well and delighted us with some strong beats.
Marie’s voice and singing left me with my mouth open more than usual today. I had the feeling she tried more things and did some different singing here and there. I can just say I am so happy I am going to so many shows. It’s so much fun and simply a joy to see Marie and the band like this.
The big smile on my face has to last now for about three weeks until Sthlm. Heeeeelp!
We interviewed Chris and Surjo today so… stay tuned. The 3 interviews will be up soon.

Patrícia’s review:

Take my review from yesterday and multiply the blowing-away factor by at least 10! Göteborg concert was P-U-R-E A-W-E-S-O-M-E-N-E-S-S!

Before the concert we met Christoffer and he said we should be prepared for maybe not the best sound, because the acoustics of the concert hall are not the best as he knows it. However, we were sure they would do their best with the sound anyway and in the end, to me it seemed to be perfect. We also met Marie before the show and she said she is so happy that so many international fans are here to support her. She was in a great mood, smiling again all the time and she also said she tries to be better than she was yesterday in Jönköping.

One word: BAREFOOT! Now we know this always means a concert will be mind-blowing.

MF_GTB_03Some of us decided that whatever happens, we will stand up already when Kom vila hos mig comes. As we’ve been mostly in the first 3 rows, we all stood up and the rest of the audience realized it had to be like that, so they stood up as well. Great crowd it was! Everyone could see that Marie & the band liked it a lot, so we kept the energy high in the crowd and so did Marie on the stage.

She was acting much more, e.g. in Bara för en dag she made gestures according to the lyrics like ”… göra mej vacker och tvätta mitt hår, låta solen torka det …”. It was great to see her acting.

During Sparvöga the audience held up glow sticks (thanks Basia Konarzewska & Chrissie Roehrs for organizing it) and moved their arms to the rythm of the song. After the song Marie said it’s a fantastic crowd. She said that after several songs, since the audience indeed was continuously fantastic.

Ett hus vid havet today was how it has to be, all the boats and seagulls were at the right place now and the ”Och göra som jag vill” (= And do what I want to do) line at the end was as effective as yesterday.

We stood up again when Så länge det lyser mittemot started and the whole audience joined us. We held up some letters to show Marie the words: KÄRLEK and VINNARE. She recognized it. KÄRLEK stayed there on the stage. Thanks to our RXB Team mate, Kirsten Ohlwein for organizing this and drawing the letters.MF_GTB_01

The biggest party was again at Efter stormen. Everyone in the front was dancing, jumping, singing along and in the back people were rather clapping. It was fab to see the crowd like this!

It was again Micke N-S who helped Marie going off the stage during Den sjunde vågen. Now talking about the crew, I must mention at this point the hilarious guitar changings of Christoffer. He is wearing a hat and when Jakob Johnzén, his technician comes up the stage, Jakob gets the hat to his head while the guitar finds its right place at Chris.

There wasn’t a long break before Marie came back to the stage. Micke was helping her to come to the mic stand. Aw, they are such a lovely couple! We’ve been already standing and also the rest of the crowd, so we were in the right position to continue the party during Mellan sommar och höst.

When we could hear the first notes of the closing song, Tro, I couldn’t and didn’t want to believe that this party was coming to an end. It was such an amazing night! Those who were in Växjö said it was very-very close to it. But one thing is sure: Göteborg crowd was the best so far! Marie confirmed it as well.

I must add that there were some changes in the lyrics here and there, but if someone doesn’t know them by heart, couldn’t recognize it. Marie handled it perfectly and she gave each song a great flow. Hats off!

After the concert Marie went straight to have a rest, but we could talk to the band. Jokke said the audience was amazing and the show MF_GTB_02was fantastic. Very similar to Växjö. Micke said it means so much to Marie that the audience is reacting like this and that gives her even more energy. He also said it was a fantastic concert and Pelle thought so, too.

Thank you, Marie & the band for the amazing experience and huge thanx for your cooperation, Göteborg!!!

Next show is on 19th March in Uppsala. There will be a bit less international fans, but I hope the spirit stays like this. More of us are there in Halmstad on 21st March, so we are expecting a very similar energetic night then.
