Per Gessle – En vacker kväll in Piteå, Sweden – 29th July 2017 – #12

Regarding promotion, I think Piteå was the most well-prepared for Per Gessle’s concert. Coming from the direction of Umeå, we already saw little boards on the highway that there would be a PG gig in Piteå. Also Pite Havsbad was very active on their Facebook page informing the guests about every detail. They expected Per to beat the audience record (appr. 12000) since on concert day they sold 1 ticket / minute, but in the end there were 8000 people in the crowd.

By arriving to our hotel, at the reception there were people asking the receptionist about the concert. It was funny that the woman there said mostly older people would go and see PG. Haha. Well, not really…

At the venue there was no queueing, you arrived and you were just let in after you got a nice paper wristband. Hardcore fans (Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, the UK) could get to the front row very easily this way. As the stage was on the seaside, we could go and have a look at the beach. It was a very nice setting. While walking on the beach, Andreas Dahlbäck came to us and we had a little chat with him. He is a very nice guy, very down-to-earth. Among other things he mentioned that Per asked him to find out something different as the intro to Sommartider. So we expected something new from him at the show.

There was no support act in Piteå and the gig started earlier than at any other place. The crowd was singing När vi två blir en and Sommartider before the band came up on stage. It was fun. PG & Co entered the stage at 20:30. I streamed the start of the show (På promenad genom stan) live on our Facebook page. Watch it HERE!

When Per first talked to the audience before Juni, juli, augusti, he mentioned that he played in Piteå in August 1981. 36 years ago, wow.

As Ola Gustafsson was born in Luleå, very close to Piteå, the crowd was cheering him loudly, mainly when Per introduced him during the band presentation. Malin-My Wall is from Holmsund, also not too far from Piteå, so the crowd was cheering Malin-My loudly as well. Per liked it so much that he repeated Holmsund several times, then even Magnus joined in mentioning Holmsund and the crowd was still cheering.

I actually expected a much louder audience during the songs, because it’s said that the more North you go in Sweden, the louder the crowds are, but there were rather smaller groups here and there in the audience who let their voice heard. However, Småstadsprat had a united sing-along. It was lovely.

There were some people in the middle who couldn’t behave well, so the security guys had to step up on the fence in front of us, ruining 2-3 songs this way, because we couldn’t see the stage from them…

This was the first concert where Per used THIS guitar for Ljudet av ett annat hjärta, Spegelboll and Gå & fiska!

The Look sing along was a bit messed up, too funny. Per was singing the nananananas being a bit late, so the crowd couldn’t join in how they should. Helena made a little correction, so we went on with the right nananananas.

Andreas did a new intro to Sommartider indeed. We already loved the one he played earlier, but this new one rocked big time! Such a fab drummer he is! During the concert he threw one of his drum sticks to the front of the stage. Sandra Knospe could get it via a security guy, then she showed it to Andreas in between 2 songs to thank it. It was broken. Then at the end of the show, after the band took a bow and said goodbye, Andreas rushed to his drumset and grabbed one more drum stick to give it to Sandra from hand to hand. It was so cool!

Chris seemed to be fine after his bleeding Joyride fun in Östersund. He had a plaster on his hand.

18 songs on the setlist is almost festival length…, but we enjoyed the show regardless.

Per after the show:

GIG #12! Pite Havsbad! Oh yea! What a place. one of the most beautiful settings I’ve ever played! So many lovely people. 8000? 9000? 10000? I dunno. They all sounded like a united nation!!! Last time I played Piteå ws in August 1981!!! Amazing. And, oh yes, we got a drum solo from mr Dahlbäck! Where will this surrealistic pillow end???? /P.

Per Gessle – En vacker kväll in Östersund, Sweden – 28th July 2017 – #11

After Stockholm, it was time to travel up North and perform at a festival in Östersund. Per Gessle and the band arrived by private jet, as expected. Mr. G shared a pic of the whole gang in front of the jet.

We arrived in the afternoon and realized that not too many hardcore fans chose to take part in the festival. I could count them on one hand. While changing our tickets to wristbands we could hear the technicians’ soundcheck and there was no band soundcheck that day.

Gates opened at 19:00 and while we were queueing to get in, we met Linnea Henriksson (you surely remember her at least from the GT tour in 2013 when she was the support act). We said hi and she recognized us and told us she would join us in front row for Gessle. Haha. She performed at 19:30 at another stage. A pity that it wasn’t she who performed on the main stage before Per. We got José González instead, who is an Argentinian-Swedish indie folk singer-songwriter and guitarist from Gothenburg. He had a bigger fan base there, very young people who knew all his lyrics and were singing along. That seemed to be a promising crowd for PG as well.

We had rain showers during the day, but by the time Per & Co came up on stage, the rain stopped falling. However, there was a little shower again from the middle of the show, but who cares.

People who live at the main square in Östersund could watch the whole gig from their balconies. How cool is that!

The crowd consisted of very young people, but they knew the lyrics and were singing along loudly to almost all songs. During Tycker om när du tar på mej, when Helena was singing, the crowd started singing parts that Helena didn’t sing. It sounded absolutely awesome! The most dancing, jumping and clapping along was to Sommartider and The Look, but yeah, Joyride as well. Actually, the audience was open to any songs and they loved each of them unconditionally. Even the security guys were dancing with each other! So lovely! People were cheering Per loudly: ”Gessle! Gessle! Gessle!” And also before the encore there was ”En gång till!” and ”Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” as well. Loved it! So even if we had the shortest setlist that night, it was a fantastic gig!

Chris went so wild during Joyride that probably a string on his guitar cut his hand, so it started bleeding. You can see it on the group pic. Hopefully, all is well with his hand now.

So, the shortest setlist. It could have been 18 songs even, but Puls (which would have worked very well with the Östersund crowd) and Småstadsprat were cut off. They were there on the original setlist though… Actually, Pet Shop Boys came after Per & Co, but only at 00:30 and even if they had a lot of technical stuff to apply on stage, our gang would have had the time to play at least 2 more songs. Btw, the crowd stayed loud during Pet Shop Boys as well. They were really a fab one! I wish such crowds for each gig!

Anders Roos was there at the festival and he took thousands of pictures again.

Per after the show:

YEEHAA! What a great reception we got at The Storsjöyran Festival in Östersund. Magic crowd and somewhat decent band! Loved it! See y’all next time! Like tomorrow! /P.

Per Gessle – En vacker kväll in Fredrikstad, Norway – 23rd July 2017 – #9

The 9th show on tour was a festival gig in Norway, the first concert outside Sweden. A handful of hardcore fans decided to go and see Per and the band there too and what a good decision they made! The gig turned out to be even more wonderful than the one in Gothenburg. Honestly, when you think Mr. G and his gang can’t surprise you with an even better show than what you had already experienced, they just do. And this coming on a 3rd day in a row when they have no days off, just gig after gig. Fantastic! They rule!

The festival crowd seemed to be in great party mood already before Per & Co came up on stage, so it was predictable they would be a loud audience for the main act too. Loud? It’s not even the right word to describe them. Ass-kicking crowd for an ass-kicking band. People cheering during the whole show, singing along all the time and clapping, whistling, dancing, jumping, whatever you can imagine.

There were several memorable moments at the concert, but just to highlight some most fab ones, I mention 2.

This was the first time Chris didn’t play a Per-song-related intro before The Look. He played In the Hall of the Mountain King (he played this as intro to Joyride already in 2011 when Roxette had a tour stop in Norway). Before he could start playing, the crowd was so loud he had to tell them ”Shhhhhhh!” Haha. Too cool!

After Sommartider, before Per could start performing Småstadsprat, the audience went ”oh-oh-oh-oh-oh”. Such a great crowd reaction, such a sweet acceptance of love from Per and the band! Watch it HERE! Says it all how the whole Månefestivalen gig was! Pure awesomeness!

Still is from Üli Car’s VIDEO of those magical oh-oh-oh-oh-oh moments!

Per’s most enthusiastic comment after a show on this tour so far:

FREDRIKSTAD, NORWAY JULY 23, 2017! Hallelujah! My Gosh what a gig. Slightly shorter version due to it being a festival but HOLY COW what a crowd! We love you! Thanx for singing along and making our lives exploding with joy! Been riding on the tour bus three hours now and we still talk about you!!! Lots of love + see ya soon!!!! /P.

All photos in the article are taken by Sandra Knospe, except for the still from Üli Car’s video. Thanx so much for your cooperation, girls!

Per Gessle – En vacker kväll in Göteborg, Sweden – 22nd July 2017 – #8

A hot, sunny day in Gothenburg, a beautiful park, some most enthusiastic Per Gessle fans and a tight band were all together to create a fantastic 8th concert night. You could feel there was something in the air in the city when already during the technicians’ soundcheck there was a guy who was dancing(?) to each and every sound Micke N-S and Jakob created on the drums and on the guitars. It was a very entertaining half an hour or so. Later there was no soundcheck for the band, so we could be kind of sure there was no new song planned to be played that night.

Lots of fans (even from Brazil!) were waiting outside the park which closed at 3 pm because of the concert and the gates opened again at 6 pm. This time we had to try if our running shoes were still working fine, since both entrances opened at the same time. Still all hardcores could find a decent spot in front of the stage.

Göteborg is usually different to any other Swedish cities and towns when it comes to concerts. People there know how to party and what the concerts are about. No picnic, no 15 meters’ distance left between the front row and the 2nd row until the support acts start playing. They are gathering in the front right after being let in. And it always feels good and promising.

Per had the same support acts with him as in Grebbestad. Alex Shield and Charla K started playing at 19:30. Now Alex was not that nervous anymore as on Friday, even talked more to the crowd. There was a little low sound problem with his guitar, but even that he took easier than in Grebbestad, just by mentioning he got a bit unfocused by this. I don’t have to mention that he sounded fab again. Charla K was also acting more, now taking off the mic from the stand and moving around a bit. She sang wonderfully again. Strandels came at 21:10 and Tova, the singer made the audience cheer for Gessle several times. She is also more and more talkative to the audience.

The stage and instruments were getting ready for Per & Co’s performance and while the technicians were busy with all this, Anders Roos set his many cameras at several places. Mr. G and the band hit the stage some minutes after 21:00. The crowd was already cheering for them several times before 9 pm.

The opening song was Min plats and it got a huge applause from the audience. Per talked to the crowd and said it’s always wonderful to play in Gothenburg. It’s almost home ground for him. He also said it’s the first time for him to play in Trädgårdsföreningen. Well, this is not really true, because in 1996 he played there twice with Gyllene Tider. Återtåget Live! was recorded at that very place. But being a hardcore live artist, one can forgive him for not remembering each and every place he played at. Haha.

The next song was På promenad genom stan and Göteborg let its voice heard. Heavy sing along on this one and dancing even in the back.

The first Gyllene Tider section with Juni, juli, augusti made the crowd clap & sing along heavily and they were even jumping along.

This time I streamed Segla på ett moln / Första pris live on our Facebook page. You can watch the video HERE.

While keeping the ”new” song /(Hon vill ha) Puls / they added to the setlist the day before (it rocked in Göteborg too!), Tittar på dej när du dansar got back and we enjoyed it so much! This song should really stay on the setlist forever. I know… I can’t mention it enough times. 😉

The crowd loved It Must Have Been Love and of course were singing along loudly. Kung av sand was also a loud hit.

Before Honung och guld, which Per wrote in the spring of 1982, Mr. G mentioned he was looking for songs he had never played live before and found like 500. Haha.

Här kommer alla känslorna (på en och samma gång) / Flickan i en Cole Porter-sång was such a blast that while grooving around in the front part of the stage, Per stumbled over his monitor. Thank God he could keep his balance and bounce on, so he didn’t fall off the stage or anything serious happened. We don’t want to see Dave Grohl’s throne on PG’s stage, right? 😉 Micke N-S recognized very quickly that something was wrong and he rushed to the monitor to set it back to its place.

The great vibes didn’t end here. Starting with Ljudet av ett annat hjärta it was onehelluva party section until Per and the band went off stage before the first encore. Spegelboll rocked big time again and the crowd didn’t stop jumping and singing along during Gå & fiska! either. The band presentation was much fun this time too and after Chris psychedelic När vi två blir en intro, The Look made the crowd go wild.

Göteborg people shouted, whistled and were clapping loudly to have the gang back on stage. The first encore with PG appearing in white was magical as usual. Varmt igen and Tycker om när du tar på mej sounded extrawonderful on Saturday. DFS was skipped, just like on Friday and the band went on with Joyride which put the crowd in party mood again. So much that until the second encore they didn’t really get silent. Then bang! Andreas came and sat behind his drums. Started the intro to Sommartider. We all loved it! PG asked the band if they were ready for more, if the guys and girls for ready for more and if Göteborg was ready for more. The crowd just went wild for this.

The set ended with Småstadsprat and the audience cheered the band while they were saying goodbye.

This was definitely one of the concerts that you didn’t want to come to an end. If I said in Grebbestad Per & Co gave 120%, in Göteborg they gave 150% at least, but not only them. The audience too! Everyone was all smiles on and off stage during the whole concert. All fans (even those who attended Töreboda) thought that Göteborg was the best gig so far. The band thought so too.

We could see a lot of PG-Chris, Ola-Chris, Ola-Chris-PG, Ola-PG, PG-Magnus, PG-Malin-My, PG-Helena, Malin-My-Magnus, Malin-My-Clarence, Helena-Malin-My, Malin-My-Chris, Andreas-Ola, Chris-Ola-Andreas, Magnus-Chris-Ola, Chris-Magnus, PG-Magnus-Chris actions on stage. One just couldn’t decide which squaremeter to watch to enjoy the visual experience of the gang’s fabulous playing together. One of my favourite actions is when Ola gets close to Per during Det hjärta som brinner and they play their guitars back to back. PG was throwing a lot of guitar picks on Saturday and by checking each other’s caught picks, we realized that there is now a Space Station 12 plec he plays. A black one with white little stars and the SS12 logo on it. Lookin’ good! /Update on 25th July: as Per says: “TO CLARIFY THINGS: There are NO OFFICIAL Space Station 12 guitarpicks made whatsoever. If you see one it’s an unofficial one. /P.” Weird thing… Now where those picks were flying from then? Hm. Anyways, good to know they are not part of the official set./

Per had so much boogie in his shoes that he was often back to his mic late when he had to sing. It was so funny and cool at the same time. He was swaying his hips all the time, doing his left leg stomping as well. Among his black outfits, the most sexy is the one he was wearing in Gothenburg. The shirt with silver stars and the trousers with silver stripes. Looks so hot! Oh and Helena! 1 or 2 concerts earlier I realized she wears no shoes on stage. She is rocking around barefoot! Too cool she is!

All in all, Göteborg never disappoints! I can’t really remember any concerts in Gothenburg that didn’t work. This city rulez! If there is any recording planned for this tour, it should have happened on Saturday. But still, let’s keep our fingers crossed that at least one of the shows will be recorded and released for our pleasure later.

PG after the show:

Mindblowing gig in Gothenburg. Wish you all were there!!!

Per Gessle – En vacker kväll in Grebbestad, Sweden – 21st July 2017 – #7

After 5 days off, 36 years after he played there for the first time, Per Gessle’s tour continued in Grebbestad on 21st July. We all were praying for good weather, because the weather forecast predicted there would be rain all day. Even Per asked us to bring the sun:

TORSDAG UPPDATERING: Har varit ledig (?) några dagar. Turne’n fortsätter med friska tag imorgon i Grebbestad. Kommer att bli grymt. Funderar på ett par nya låtar….. kanske “Oh yeah oh yeah (oh oh)” eller “Solens vän”…. Eller nåt. Syns snart, P.

THURSDAY UPDATE: Yes, dear you! The En vacker kväll-tour continues proudly tomorrow in Grebbestad. Bring the sun, we’ll bring Clarence. /P.

It was indeed raining heavily all day, but surprise surprise, by the time the support acts started playing, there was no rain at all. The security team was very nice anyway, they let us be waiting under a tent, so that we don’t get soaking wet.

Besides praying to the weather gods, we were also praying for PG talking seriously when he wrote he was thinking about a couple of new songs for the show. We of course were quite sure he wouldn’t play Oh Yeah Oh Yeah (Oh Oh), but Solens vän sounded promising. However, if we were him, we would still go for some more PG solo instead. Mr. G and the band arrived for soundcheck at 16:15. There was indeed a ”new” song to be rehearsed and it was (Hon vill ha) Puls. They played it 4-5 times and Per all the time asked the band to make it slower. He found it too fast how they were playing it. We already found the fast version too slow though. Haha. They also rehearsed Första pris and Min plats. And that was it… They finished at 17:00. So we were sure Puls would be included and we just hoped it wouldn’t replace any other song, but added to the set. Wishful thinking…

This time there were 2 support acts again, but it was the first time Alex Shield & Charla K (Space Station 12) joined in. Both of them sounded fab. You could feel that for Alex it’s not yet comfortable to play live, probably mainly for such a big audience. His hands were shaking and also his voice in the beginning, but how he is playing the guitar and how he sings out high and low sounds is amazing. He should gain more self confidence, because what he is doing is absolutely great (both regarding songwriting and playing and singing live). You have to start somewhere and I’m quite sure Alex will get the groove very fast. Charla K has an amazing voice and she was born to perform, that’s for sure. She handles the audience very easily. The 2 best sounding songs were Good Fight and Should’a Let Me Go performed by them. After them came Strandels and they were again very good at warming up the audience for Gessle.

PG & Co came up on stage shortly after 9 pm, the crowd was cheering them loudly. The opening song this time was På promenad genom stan. Even if they rehearsed Min plats at the soundcheck, they skipped it. Not that we have anything against starting the show with a well-known song. It works quite well. The audience starts singing along immediately and it sets the mood.

Regarding Puls, unfortunately, it wasn’t an addition. It replaced Tittar på dej när du dansar. Not just that… The setlist got even shorter by cutting it with Dressed For Success. Not good, not good. 19 songs were played in the end and it wasn’t even a festival show. Ojoj.

Regardless of how many songs were played, Per gave 120% on stage and the band as well. They were very energetic and work together better and better by every gig. I think I mentioned it already before and it’s still valid: the best party songs are Ljudet av ett annat hjärta and Spegelboll. Very powerful how they come after each other and the crowd can’t stop dancing and jumping.

This time I chose Tycker om när du tar på mej to stream live on our Facebook page. HERE you can watch the video. Sounds so beautiful you must hear it live in person!

Sommartider wasn’t played as the first song of the 2nd encore, but at the end of the first encore, right after Joyride, so the intro to it wasn’t so powerful in Grebbestad. BUT, the crowd loved it and didn’t want the band go off stage again.

Småstadsprat was very popular among the people in Grebbestad. The crowd was singing along loudly. Nice ending of the show, but still, when even Per himself mentions in the Hallandsposten interview that it’s unnecessary to bring the energy down again when you have already built it up. We agree! That’s why we would love to have an uptempo ending to the shows. Sommartider works perfectly as a last song and Småstadsprat would fit in somewhere else in the setlist.

Marie Dimberg was there at the show too. She was filming both the support acts and Per’s performance. Åsa was there too and she is getting even more professional at filming. She now used 2 iPhones at the same time. Haha. Videos are already available on GessleHomeVids.

Sponsor Vera & John used the big magenta balls again, but in Grebbestad the crowd somehow pushed it all the time towards the stage. Magnus kicked it once and the ball got back again and again. Once Micke N-S got fed up with it and grabbed it, then killed it. Actually, these balls are really heavy, much tougher than the Roxette beach balls we had in 2011-2012, so they are more dangerous as well, if they hit someone or something on stage.

Anders Roos was also there to take photos both at the soundcheck and during the concert.

6350 people decided to see PG in Grebbestad and with this, TanumStrand reached a record number of visitors. According to Per, the show was even sold out.

Per about Grebbestad:

GREBBESTAD! Yeehaa! Fantastiskt gig inför ett utsålt Tanumstrand. Vi hade skitkul. Ni också, såg det ut som!!!! Videos imorgon på YouTube: GessleHomeVids – Godnatt! /P.
