Interview with Pelle Alsing – it’s all about the groove

We have wanted to interview Pelle for a long time, and we actually did last year in April, just right after Marie’s tour. We hadn’t found an appropriate time during the tour and when we were waiting for the Arlanda Express to take us to Stockholm the day after Marie’s tour last concert in Umeå , Pelle just showed up and offered to do the interview right there, right then. So we found a place on the train and we started to shoot questions. Unfortunately, some technical issues made it imposible for the interview to be published so we went for an e-mail interview instead and sent our questions to him towards the end of last year. Pelle’s been very busy with touring with Roxette and finalizing the first album with his own band, Down Harrison, so understandably, it took some time until he could sit down and answer our shocking number of Qs some days ago.

Down Harrison’s debut album with the same title as the band’s name was released on March 28th. The band, besides Pelle Alsing on drums, consists of Tommy Cassemar (bass), Jesper Willaume (singer, songwriter) and Mikael Wedberg (guitar, keyboards). Ola Gustafsson joins the band from time to time on guitars and pedal steel.

Check out their album on iTunes, Spotify or Tidal and if you are into what they are doing, you can follow the band on Facebook as well.

Now back to where we started, here you can read the interview with Pelle, the “keep-it-simple” guy. Most of his answers will make you smile or even laugh and some of his extra short replies will leave you curious to know more about Pelle Alsing. Don’t be shy to ask him if you meet him on tour. At the beach or in a bar. 😉

RXB: – Hi Pelle, thank you for your time. How are you doing after the first two legs of the Roxette 30th anniversary tour?
Pelle: – I’m doing fine! Both legs were great! It’s always great to come back to Australia! 2 weeks left until the European tour, yippie!

RXB: – What have you been doing between tours? You recently came back from New Zealand and Australia with Roxette…
Pelle: – Working with my own band DOWN HARRISON! Both before and after NZ and Australia!

RXB: – Let’s go back to the beginning. When did you start playing the drums and why?
Pelle: – My big brother Hans bought a drum kit when I was 9-10 years! I couldn’t resist the kit!

RXB: – What do you think makes a drummer unique?
Pelle: – The groove!

RXB: – When you listen to another drummer, what do you listen for?
Pelle: – The groove!

RXB: – What are your favourite bands and who are your favourite drum players? Which ones made the biggest impact on you?
Pelle: – Wilco, The Band, Little Feat, Jackson Browne, and a thousand more bands and artists! The Beatles!

RXB: – Do you attend many concerts? If so, you rather go to pubs to enjoy live music or to see big bands performing in arenas?
Pelle: – No, not that many. Both!

RXB: – What was the last big concert you watched from the crowd?
Pelle: – James Taylor.

RXB: – Which is your most memorable concert (not necessarily Rox-related) of all time?
Pelle: – Gentle Giant 1975 and Genesis 1977 in Stockholm.

RXB: – What other bands or artists do you play with besides Roxette, Marie or The Husbands?
Pelle: – Billy Bremner live and my own band DOWN HARRISON in the studio.

RXB: – In April last year you mentioned you were recording an album with your band. Do you have any news for us?
Pelle: – Yes I have! We have just released our first album with DOWN HARRISON on iTunes, Spotify and Tidal! Check it out!!! Enjoy!!!

RXB: – What kind of music do you make?
Pelle: – Americana with a touch of pop and country.

RXB: – What are you the most proud of during your career?
Pelle: – Many things! DOWN HARRISON and Roxette for instance.

RXB: – Is there anything you would skip or change if you could start it again?
Pelle: – No.

RXB: – Do you listen to a lot of music? New music? What’s your actual favourite album?
Pelle: – Yes, sometimes! Right now Jackson Browne and Jeff Tweedy’s new albums.

RXB: – We know you are into sports. What was the last sports event you went to see and where?
Pelle: – Hammarby football club in our new arena in Stockholm!

RXB: – What do you think you bring to the bands you play with or is your trademark?
Pelle: – Humor and play simple.

RXB: – What is it like to be in the back on the stage? Do you concentrate on your drums or do you have time to look at the audience, see what’s going
Pelle: – Fantastic! Both.

RXB: – Has anyone ever asked you to teach him playing the drums? Have you ever had “students”?
Pelle: – Yes.

RXB: – When we did an interview with Mikael Nogueira Svensson, he said he decided to play the drums after he met you as a child, backstage in Gävle on the Joyride tour. How does it feel knowing that someone started playing the drums because you made an impact on him with your playing?
Pelle: – It’s great when people get inspired by what you’ve done!

RXB: – We know guitar strings are changed very often, but how often is it necessary to change the heads on your drums?
Pelle: – Every 5-6 shows.

RXB: – Is there any special exercise to keep your wrists fit on tour?
Pelle: – Tap dancing at 6 o’clock, every morning!

RXB: – Did it ever happen during your long career that you got injured during your playing? Or if the drumsticks fell out of your hands so you had to stop playing for some seconds or longer time?
Pelle: – I put the stick up my nose last tour and started to bleed, haha! Sometimes you loose a stick, then you have to play with one stick for a couple of bars, until you get a new one!

RXB: – It’s strange that now there was no song when you came to the front. Even during “The Heart Shaped Sea” and “Queen of Rain” when everyone else came to the front you stayed in the back. Was it you who insisted on staying there?
Pelle: – No, but I prefer to sit behind my drums!

RXB: – You have been playing drums with Roxette for many years. In between you also joined Marie during her solo tour last year. What was the biggest difference for you?
Pelle: – All the songs I’ve never played before.

RXB: – You have also known Clarence for many years, and of course, also Marie and Per. How is it to play with people you know for so long? Are you afraid it may become a “routine”?
Pelle: – No, never! I love working and hanging with these guys!

RXB: – You also work in the studio with Roxette, not only on tours. Do you come up with the beats “on the fly” in the studio, or give ideas how something would sound better?
Pelle: – I listen to the songs, to be prepared! It differs from time to time.

RXB: – What about live? Do you like to improvise?
Pelle: – It depends on what music you play.

RXB: – Which Roxette song is the most fun for you to play live? And which is the most “boring”?
Pelle: – “Joyride” and “Listen to your heart”. “Goodbye to you”, hihi!

RXB: – Any tricky songs where you have to concentrate more on your hands or when to join in with the drums?
Pelle: – No, not really.

RXB: – How much are you involved in the design of your drum kit? Do you have several set of drums and for example, the one you play on the Roxette tour is only for Roxette and you play another with other bands? Or do you use the same set with all acts?
Pelle: – I’m involved in the design, but also open for ideas. I have several drum kits and use a couple of them with Roxette only!

RXB: – How many drum sticks do you use during a concert? Do they become worn during one concert or you can use them at more gigs?
Pelle: – 2-4 sticks per show and I can use them again.

RXB: – Do you have any drum sticks from any of your idols? If no, whose drumstick would you love to have one day?
Pelle: – No. Ringo Starr.

RXB: – Once you said you also like to visit the places you go to when you are on tour. What did you see during this tour so far?
Pelle: – Bars and Beaches!!

RXB: – Do you plan these trips or visits before going to the countries or cities or is it more a spontaneous thing depending on weather, mood?
Pelle: – I plan it.

RXB: – You grew up and live in Stockholm. I think it’s a beautiful city and every time I am there I just love the view from Slussen/Fotografiska. What do you like about Stockholm?
Pelle: – I live just above Fotografiska! Södermalm where I live and the Archipelago!

RXB: – Do you try to “discover” new places in your own city as well?
Pelle: – Yes, everyday.

RXB: – What do you like the most about tour life? And the least?
Pelle: – Everything! Nothing!

RXB: – Per is often kidding you in backstage videos and interviews that you are always late and you tell the same about him that you all always have to wait for him. So who of you is more of a late person?
Pelle: – Definitely Per!

RXB: – Does it happen nowadays that you play e.g. table hockey or any other game during the tour, like you did in the past? Or is it like everyone is rather on their iPhones and you meet up only for a walk or having dinner or a drink together?
Pelle: – More bars and iPhones nowadays!

RXB: – We heard how the plush koala got on stage in Russia and since then we could see it next to your drums on each concert last year. Did you give a name to him?
Pelle: – Yes, Sibyllfibia!

RXB: – Thank you for the interview and your awesome drum playing! See you soon again.
Pelle: – Take care and see you in Europe this summer! Tell everybody you know about DOWN HARRISON!!!!

Marie’s tour: Västerås, 12th April #17

Yesterday Marie and the band rocked Västerås big time!

The first row was again mostly full of fans, but there were some also in the other rows, which probably helped to keep the mood happy and loud throughout the whole concert. Of course, the band was awesome and Marie was in a very good mood, so all this were the perfect ingredients that made the Swedes want to join the party. And they did already on song #2. After a few shows where we had to wait until towards the end to see some action, I was pretty surprised and felt so happy for the girl and boys on stage. They seemed to be happy with the response as well because they were all smiles, proud smiles.

Of course, Efter stormen was the song where really everybody (not only the fans) stood up and clapped and sang along, but you could see that in many other songs as well. Even the people at the balcony were standing and having fun, and Marie saw that and waved to them with a big smile. At some places we have seen skeptic or a bit angry faces when we stood up to some songs, but yesterday the audience seemed to like that. Like the 70-something ladies in the first row who had a blast; or the 4-6 Swedes that were sitting in row 2 who first looked shocked when we stood up but at the end thanked us in the first row for spreading the fun; or the two mid 50 ladies in the first row who were faster standing up than some of us!

The craziest rockiest song was Mellan sommar och höst. The audience was already standing up when Marie walked out to the stage again and everybody went wild with the amazing guitars and Marie’s rocky voice.

This concert was also the last one for many fans and Marie and band knew it, so they gave special attention to the ones on first row. Specially during Tro when everybody hugged and moved to the rythm of the song and many of us were all tears she gave those looks of hers to many of us. At the end, she also made sad faces to some of the fans she knew were saying goodbye to the tour yesterday night. It was not possible to  hold back the tears, it is actually also not possible as I am writing this now. It has been so special… the love tour 🙂

Some fans had prepared flowers and a card for Marie to thank her for the great tour. Many fans had signed it and Anne gave it to Chris at the end of the show. The fans who waited for Marie after the concert explained that Micke had thanked them for coming to the concerts and said that fans turned the tour to something completely different and special and he added that the reviews were all very good because of that.

By the way, Clarence was in the audience yesterday night.

So now it’s just 2 concerts left: Luleå and Umeå. Those who are going to the last shows will surely give our best and party until the end!

Marie’s tour: Stockholm, 8th April #15

Judith’s review
Today it was finally the day for concert that many were waiting for, expecting it to be a blast! And what to say, the concert was more than super! Marie was welcomed by a very very loud crowd and she had to wait a bit to start singing the first song. After that she was all smiles! The shouting and the smiles remained the whole concert.

After an amazing concert in Linköping I didn’t think this could be topped, but wow! The band did an amazing job, I’ve never seen Surjo move around so much before, Chris, watch out! 😉

Jokke was all smiles all the time, as were all of us in the audience. Jokke also delivered an incredible solo in Den sjunde vågen, which also felt longer than usual. It was simply great to see the band and Marie have so much fun with us, or the other way around.

The most touching song was probably the last one, Tro. It was the last concert for many fans and I could see many of us hugging and singing along. It felt as if the song had suddenly become a hymn for love and friendship. Not to forget to mention that fans had arranged to bring roses to give to Marie at the end. Everybody had one rose, at the end of Tro all of them were brought to the front and put on the stage. Micke collected them all and took them backstage for Marie.

There were also some familiar faces in the audience. Lasse Lindbom, Anders Herrlin, Mats MP Persson, Jonas Åkerlund and, last but not least, Per and Åsa, just to mention a few. Per posted on Facebook that they celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Look reaching #1 in USA at the after-show party.

Patrícia’s review

Per and Åsa at Cirkus - sorry for the bad quality pic... :)
Åsa & Per at Cirkus – sorry for the bad quality pic…
Check out Roxette Rosario’s pic, too 😉

As you could already read here and there, Marie’s gig in Stockholm was marvellous with many famous people in the crowd. Oh yes, with Per among them! Woohoo! We’ve been expecting him to appear at this concert, but we couldn’t be sure he would really come until we saw Åsa, Per and Jonas Åkerlund arriving together 1-2 minutes before 19:30. They found their places in the 10th row, on the left side, close to the exit. After many Roxers realized Per was there, we started clapping and he and Åsa waved to us smiling. After some minutes we repeated it. It was awesome to see him in the crowd, sitting among us. Besides them, there were many other familiar faces and now I’m not talking only about the hardcore fans. Mats MP Persson (who was sitting in front of Per), Anders Herrlin, Clarence Öfwerman, Dea Norberg (she even posted a pic on her Instagram), Marie Dimberg, Lasse Lindbom were there in the audience, just to name some of them, but there were many other famous Swedish people in the crowd. Also Oscar, Marie’s son was there, sitting in the 6th row, together with his grandma, Micke’s mum.

MF_CirkusOne could have thought that this crowd would make Marie and the band nervous, but no! They were in TOP shape and rocked Cirkus! The sound was perfect and Marie’s voice simply blown us away. She was smiling a lot and the audience was clapping so much that some songs had to wait to be started. I think there was no concert where they could start Så stilla så långsamt so late, waiting for the audience to be silent. Marie enjoyed it so much, you could see it on her face. She was shining!

I must admit that the audience was very good at clapping, they could even follow the rhythm Surjo and Micke showed by clapping themselves, but if you ask about how many of them stood up… Hm. We, the international fans (Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czecz Republic, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, The Netherlands, USA etc.) were sitting at different places in the crowd, owing to the not so funny mechanism the tickets went on sale in October. Some got tickets in rows in the middle, some in the front, some in the back, others on the balcony. We thought it was a great chance to animate the Swedish part of the crowd even more, since we could do a little of this ”job” in every corner of Cirkus.

We stood up already at Kom vila hos mig and we expected the Cirkus crowd being at least as cool as Göteborg audience was and following us, but not really. Unfortunately, there were a lot of people in the middle and on the left of the first 4-5 rows who were not willing to stand up, so people in the back could have thought it was still better to be sitting. We thought, OK, maybe at the next fast song they would realize how they should act when seeing how Marie loves this reaction and they see the security guys didn’t make us sitting.

Oh yes, talking about security guys – who were not present at any other shows so far – Atli, from Show Security Sweden was there too. You surely remember him and his team from the Gyllene Tider tour. I greeted him after the concert and he said the show was great, he liked it a lot.

Back to the concert: Så länge det lyser mittemot made us stand up and dance again. Then there were some more in the crowd who followed us, but the left side was still sitting, only clapping. Efter stormen was our next party song. It rocked big time again! There were Swedes sitting in front of me and it was such a good feeling to see them deciding: ”OK, maybe now we could really stand up” and they did so. C’mon, people! There is nothing wrong with it… Live it!

Den sjunde vågen was fabulous this time again and I always have a big smile on my face when I see Marie’s reaction to the fact she has to go off stage. It’s different every time, but always so lovely. After she left the stage, the guys went crazy. Christoffer even throw away his hat. Hat was grabbed up by Jokke when they also left the stage. I have to mention that I think Jokke was the best on this concert from the 5 I’ve seen. He’s a great guitarist! We couldn’t stop clapping and being loud to have Marie back on stage and some minutes later she appeared again for the extra songs. We didn’t sit down and Mellan sommar och höst was again the song that made even more people stand up. Even Per stood up towards the end of it. Hats off, Mr. G! We’re very proud of you! 😉 Then came Den bästa dagen and many of us had the feeling it was really the best day of our lives. Such a fantastic concert it was! And it hadn’t ended yet. During Tro we stood up again and there were roses in our hands. We’ve been holding them up and waving them during the whole song. Thank you very much for the great idea, Christina Tholander and Nina Wolfframm and also thanx a lot to Heartland Anne, who organized roses for many fans and even a heart-shaped bunch of red roses for Marie. When the song ended, we’ve been forwarding the roses to the front and Micke was collecting them, while Marie got one bunch of red roses from a fan, handed over by Micke N-S and Chris collected the heart-shaped bunch. It looked fab and Marie was so happy to get the flowers. Awesomeness! (You can see it here, in the video I embedded and on these 3 Instagram pics: 1, 2, 3.) Per was leaving his seat before Tro ended, but Åsa stayed until the end of the song.

After the concert, there was a celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Look’s becoming No. 1. on the Billboard. The celebration took place in a separated area of the restaurant at Cirkus. Everyone looked very happy and enjoyed their time there. Per’s comment on tonight’s show:

TUESDAY EVENING UPDATE: Had a blast at Marie’s gig at Cirkus in Stockholm. Wonderful concert and Miss Effe + band in top shape. Great to see so many Roxers making a lotta noise. Afterwards some press + celebration with old friends. As you probably know by now….The Look No 1 in the US goes 25! Thanx Warner/EMI for being great hosts! Cheers, P.

We’re glad you enjoyed it! We had a blast, too! Unfortunately, this was my last concert on this tour. I’m very sad about it, but I’m grateful that I could be a part of it and enjoy every second of 5 absolutely fabulous and exceptional concerts. Tack så väldigt mycket Marie & the band! By the way, can you believe that only 4 shows left from this magical tour? Impossible. We need a next tour soon!

Marie’s tour: Halmstad, 21st March #11

Halmstad was cooking almost at the same temperature as Gothenburg! What a great show and what a great audience again!

Since the venue was changed from Halmstad Arena to Halmstad Theater, a much smaller place, everyone who bought the tickets already the first day they went on sale in October was worrying about the seats, how the organizers would solve this issue. We hoped for not sitting in the 15th row if we had a ticket for the 1st row, however, the organizers tried to assure us that it wouldn’t be the case. We were still not sure about how it could work, until we actually got into the theater and saw that they renumbered the seats, so everyone could be satisfied with the new seats.

In the audience – besides many Roxers from abroad (Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Denmark, etc.)there were Göran Fritzon (from Gyllene Tider) and Jan-Owe Wikström (Hallandsposten; author of the Alla tiders Gyllene Tider book among others). We missed 1 big Roxer though, but we hope for his appearance at least in the crowd at a future concert. Per, you must go and see Ms Effe! She’s awesome! But you know that.

Some of us met Marie and the band when they arrived to Halmstad and they were all smiles already then. We were excited to see them on stage again. Before the show, when almost everyone found their places, a girl from the crew came and distributed some signed Marie cards (the one you could get if you pre-ordered her album Nu!) to the fans in the front rows. It was very nice. Thanks a lot for that!

MF_Halmstad_03And the show began. Should I mention Marie was barefoot? Now it’s quite evident she performs like that and we just love it.

After the acoustic Så stilla så långsamt we just jumped up from our seats and so did almost the whole audience, so the fab intro of Kom vila hos mig led us to a great party this time again. Halmstad crowd was almost as cooperative as the one in Gothenburg. Marie mentioned it already at this song how fantastic the audience is. She kept the acting she did in Gothenburg during Bara för en dag. So lovely! The bridge between Det regnar igen and Sista sommarens vals is still something fabulous. Ber bara en gång brought the party feeling again, but we were sitting, just clapping and dancing while sitting. At Sparvöga Marie mentioned it’s her favourite song and it sounded amazing this time, too. During Ett hus vid havet a seagull flew to the wrong place, but otherwise the performance was fantastic. Still so heart-warming how Marie and Jokke are performing it together. Then came the 2 most touching songs, Ett bord i solen and Så skimrande var aldrig havet. Marie’s facial expressions and how she feels these songs were again undescribable. Ännu doftar kärlek made the audience sing along. Not too loud, but you could hear more people were singing out loud than before. Party time again AND this time the audience stayed standing also after Så länge det lyser mittemot, so we were still dancing during Om du såg mig nu and of course during Efter stormen. Wow! THAT was a party! By the end of the tour there might be a concert where no one is sitting, but standing during the whole show. Before ES, Marie thanked the Roxette fans in English for being there. She got a loud response from the fans. Some fans also shouted ”I love you, Marie!” several times and they got a reply from Marie: ”I love you, too!” The party at the end of Den sjunde vågen when Marie already went off the stage (helped by MNS) was so intensive that even Christoffer’s hat fell off his head.

During the break we didn’t sit down, were clapping and standing all the time, waiting for Marie to come back. And she came back, of course. Micke was helping her again to find her place at the mic stand. The party went on with Mellan sommar och höst, then came Den bästa dagen. Before the closing song, Tro, Marie thanked in Swedish for all the energy she gets from the crowd. It means a lot to her. And it means a lot to us. It’s really fantastic to see her reactions, how she loves the active audience. One can see the whole band enjoys it much more when the crowd makes some noise. Even Surjo was acting more tonight, clapping and dancing a bit in the background and Micke was playing the keyboards many times standing and dancing more than how I could see them before.

MF_Halmstad_heart

At the end of the concert, a red heart was back. This time there wasn’t ”Tack!” written on it, but it was a heart-shaped pillow Marie got from a fan, Nikolett. That’s what you can see on the picture here.

Halmstad audience was really fab, joining us whenever we stood up and clapping with us to the rhythm. I loved the reactions of some older Swedish people behind me. They were happy about being part of a crowd like this and they were smiling all the time.

After the show Marie came out and gave some autographs. We also met Pelle and Chris. Chris said it really makes a difference to them when we are there. He said his favourite concert so far was Gothenburg and also Växjö, but tonight’s Halmstad show was very close to them. Chris asked us if we know the guitarist of Gyllene Tider… Of course we know! Pelle and Chris said MP (Mats MP Persson) was playing at a place not too far from the theater, so if we want to see him, we should go there. Some of us went there and yes, MP was playing with a band. They were covering e.g. Bryan Adams: Summer of 69 and we were in time for hearing their cover of Tylö Sun from Gyllene Tider. Per’s voice was definitely missing, but otherwise MP’s playing was great. I had a chance to talk to him a bit and he said they play together with this band once a month. He seemed to feel more comfortable with this cozy set up on stage than with Gyllene Tider. He agreed. This ”after-party” was a great closure of tonight.

Marie and the band are in Karlstad tomorrow. Have fun, everyone and make some noise there, too!

Ett hus vid havet

Göteborg was cooking tonight!

For the setlist and collection of reviews click here.

Take my review from yesterday and multiply the blowing-away factor by at least 10! Göteborg concert was P-U-R-E A-W-E-S-O-M-E-N-E-S-S!

Before the concert we met Christoffer and he said we should be prepared for maybe not the best sound, because the acoustics of the concert hall are not the best as he knows it. However, we were sure they would do their best with the sound anyway and in the end, to me it seemed to be perfect. We also met Marie before the show and she said she is so happy that so many international fans are here to support her. She was in a great mood, smiling again all the time and she also said she tries to be better than she was yesterday in Jönköping.

One word: BAREFOOT! Now we know this always means a concert will be mind-blowing.

MF_GTB_03Some of us decided that whatever happens, we will stand up already when Kom vila hos mig comes. As we’ve been mostly in the first 3 rows, we all stood up and the rest of the audience realized it had to be like that, so they stood up as well. Great crowd it was! Everyone could see that Marie & the band liked it a lot, so we kept the energy high in the crowd and so did Marie on the stage.

She was acting much more, e.g. in Bara för en dag she made gestures according to the lyrics like ”… göra mej vacker och tvätta mitt hår, låta solen torka det …”. It was great to see her acting.

During Sparvöga the audience held up glow sticks (thanks Basia Konarzewska & Chrissie Roehrs for organizing it) and moved their arms to the rythm of the song. After the song Marie said it’s a fantastic crowd. She said that after several songs, since the audience indeed was continuously fantastic.

MF_GTB_01

Ett hus vid havet today was how it has to be, all the boats and seagulls were at the right place now and the ”Och göra som jag vill” (= And do what I want to do) line at the end was as effective as yesterday.

We stood up again when Så länge det lyser mittemot started and the whole audience joined us. We held up some letters to show Marie the words: KÄRLEK and VINNARE. She recognized it. KÄRLEK stayed there on the stage. Thanks to our RXB Team mate, Kirsten Ohlwein for organizing this and drawing the letters.

The biggest party was again at Efter stormen. Everyone in the front was dancing, jumping, singing along and in the back people were rather clapping. It was fab to see the crowd like this!

It was again Micke N-S who helped Marie going off the stage during Den sjunde vågen. Now talking about the crew, I must mention at this point the hilarious guitar changings of Christoffer. He is wearing a hat and when Jakob Johnzén, his technician comes up the stage, Jakob gets the hat to his head while the guitar finds its right place at Chris.

MF_GTB_02There wasn’t a long break before Marie came back to the stage. Micke was helping her to come to the mic stand. Aw, they are such a lovely couple! We’ve been already standing and also the rest of the crowd, so we were in the right position to continue the party during Mellan sommar och höst.

When we could hear the first notes of the closing song, Tro, I couldn’t and didn’t want to believe that this party was coming to an end. It was such an amazing night! Those who were in Växjö said it was very-very close to it. But one thing is sure: Göteborg crowd was the best so far! Marie confirmed it as well.

I must add that there were some changes in the lyrics here and there, but if someone doesn’t know them by heart, couldn’t recognize it. Marie handled it perfectly and she gave each song a great flow. Hats off!

After the concert Marie went straight to have a rest, but we could talk to the band. Jokke said the audience was amazing and the show was fantastic. Very similar to Växjö. Micke said it means so much to Marie that the audience is reacting like this and that gives her even more energy. He also said it was a fantastic concert and Pelle thought so, too.

Thank you, Marie & the band for the amazing experience and huge thanx for your cooperation, Göteborg!!!

Next show is on 19th March in Uppsala. There will be a bit less international fans, but I hope the spirit stays like this. More of us are there in Halmstad on 21st March, so we are expecting a very similar energetic night then.

Being blown away song by song by Marie in Jönköping

MF_Jokke_Ett_hus_vid_havetIt was a special concert from RoxetteBlog’s point of view, since 4 of the 5 RoxetteBloggers were there in Jönköping tonight. The standard review you will find if you scroll down on our website, but why I’m writing a separate review is because almost a month passed since the tour started, but my time has come only today. For me it was a very special show, because it was my first ever Marie solo concert. And it was just a perfectly fantastic first experience for me. Marie was in a very good mood, smiling all the time, even joking many times and doing funny facial expressions. One must love this woman!

When she entered the stage we could already see she was barefoot again. So we could be kind of sure about the outcome, that it was going to be a fab show. Sitting in the front row  made you feel very close to her, actually, it felt like being on a private concert.

Så stilla så långsamt sounds awesome in this arrangement live. I saw some videos already on YouTube and already thought it sounded great, but hearing it live was amazing. Marie and Christoffer are magical in this.

Then came Kom vila hos mig. I was among the ones who from the very beginning questioned this tour being seated. Then I thought OK, maybe I’ve just never attended any concerts like this in the past and just don’t know how it is when you’re actually there. NOW I can tell it IS very hard to be sitting. At this song I felt like standing up, but as everyone was still sitting, I didn’t dare to. Too bad. This song just rocks too much. Both on the album and live.

Jokke_setlistIf you ask me, it was still hard sitting during Bara för en dag. I’m always amazed how Marie can sing this song live because of the fast parts. I can’t even read out those words so fast after one another. She rulez!

Det regnar igen, just like any other song from Marie’s best album, Den ständiga resan, is very much her. How she is feeling the song makes you have goosebumps.

Sista sommarens vals is also very much Marie. Of course, it’s the only song she wrote for her latest album, Nu! What I was missing in this song was a closer connection between Marie and Micke. Yes, sometimes I felt Micke was sitting too much in the back for that. And it’s of course not a complaint and I know it can’t always be the way it was in Tack för musiken show last December. Micke is fantastic on the piano.

I always liked Ber bara en gång, but it was just after I saw a video from this tour on YouTube when I started loving it. Should I mention it was hard sitting during this one, too…?

Sparvöga was again an awesome live experience. You can see how much Marie loves this song. All her facial expressions are showing it.

Then came some real funny moments in Ett hus vid havet. This is the song which is performed by Marie and Jokke. Jokke is standing next to her, also singing some part of the song. He has a great voice! From the videos it might not be evident for everyone, but he DOES have a pleasant voice. The funny moments: Marie messed up the lyrics, but was just smiling at it, mixing up boats and seagulls. She was looking at Jokke’s mouth to see what he was singing, but she just wanted to sing ”Och göra som jag vill” (= And do what I want to do). Who cares? Marie, you CAN do whatever you want to do! We were laughing so much at her reactions during this song.

Marie_JönköpingEtt bord i solen was one of the most touching songs. She said before she started singing that she wrote it when she got cancer. It made me remember how grateful we all have to be that she is still here, giving so much to us with her singing.

The next most touching song was Så skimrande var aldrig havet. I’ve never been a big fan of this song, but my Gosh… Marie’s performance left me breathless. Also her facial expressions during the song were undescribable. This song is just so much hers.

At some point, Marie said she is performing new and old songs during the concert, but mainly old ones. It was funny how she expressed herself. Ännu doftar kärlek is definitely one of the oldest, but also one of the best songs.

Then came Så länge det lyser mittemot. I don’t even have to mention it was hard sitting during this song, too…. So we stood up towards the end. Unfortuntaly, from row 4 no one else felt like this, but at least we had a party in the front and Marie and the band liked it.

I’m not sure anymore about before which song Marie wanted to go on with the next song, but everyone else was late, so she was laughing and said: ”OK, nästa” (= OK, the next one). The audience was also laughing out loud. Maybe it was before Om du såg mig nu.

And what we’ve been all waiting for, the real party came at Efter stormen. First we stood up in the front rows, then everyone else in the audience stood up. We’ve been dancing, jumping, singing along. At last!!! It felt incredibly good!

Again came a slower song, Den sjunde vågen. We had some more funny moments, which I also have on video. Check it out by clicking on the embedded video in the article. I started recording it from the lovely sound Marie made while taking a breath (we were smiling at it) and you can also see it wasn’t BoJo who helped Marie going off the stage tonight, but Micke N-S. It was such a funny part. After Miss Effe went off the stage, the guys went crazy with the guitars. They could have their rocking moments. Both Christoffer and Jokke could let their guitars bleed. Surjo might not be the craziest guitarist on Earth. To me he seems to be a calm and quiet person, but he is also doing a fantastic job back with his bass. Pelle is great on the drums, we could get used to it during the Roxette tours. There is a plexi glass in front of his drumset since Malmö concert and this probably provides an even better sound. The sound was fab.

Marie didn’t let us wait so long and she came back to the stage after about 2 minutes. It was just a very short break. We felt she really wanted to be on stage again. And oh yes! The first extra song is Mellan sommar och höst, my all time favourite MF song. It rocked big time and the whole audience was standing again. Front rows were even dancing & jumping again. Woohoo!

Then came Den bästa dagen and when Marie messed up the lyrics, the audience helped her singing out loud and she thanked it while she was smiling. It is always so heart-warming when the audience helps her like this. Those who already attended some other concerts during the tour, said it was the first time during this tour when the audience helped like this.

Why do all good things come to an end? The last song was of course Tro. Yet another song which is very much Marie. Towards the end of the song we held up some letters so she could read the word: VINNARE (= winner). She is! And we are also winners to have her! Thank you so much for all what you are giving to us, Marie!

After the concert fans were heading to the hotel where we thought Marie was staying and when Marie and Micke came we had a small chat with them. They said it was a great show and thanked to us for that. They also said it was hot in the theatre, but we said they could only thank it to themselves.

Then came the rest of the band, Chris, Pelle, Jokke and Surjo. Chris said from the stage the beginning of the concert seemed to be so-so, but the energy was rising and rising. When I said there is not so much space for Chris and Jokke to play the guitar like what we are used to how Chris plays it on a Roxette tour or Jokke in his own band, they said it’s fine like this. And it IS fine like this. The focus is now completely on Marie and we love it. But we also love the band. They sound great together!

God! I’m sooo grateful I still have 4 concerts to go! Tomorrow Göteborg!!!

Interview with Marie Fredriksson before the tour

Helsingborgs Dagblad (Björn Gadd) did an interview with Marie before the tour starts today in Helsingborg. They asked her what comes to her mind when she looks back on her career. She says:

Time flies when you’re having fun. I am so happy and grateful for everything I’ve been through and that I can still keep on doing what I love most of all.

To the question what she gets her energy and inspiration from she replied she’s at home as much as she can. She can’t wait for spring to come, listening to the birds. She doesn’t like winter.

650x573_MF_tour_2014She talks about how difficult it is – after her illness – for her to write lyrics to songs, she usually starts with the music. She is very proud of Sista sommarens vals, the one and only song she wrote for her new album, “Nu!”.

About Per Gessle she says he has been a great support for her over the years and when it was the hardest time of her life. He is a very dear friend to her and they have a very good sister-brother relationship. Marie is happy that Per wanted to write a song to her in Swedish. That song is Känn dig som hemma.

Ms Effe says she likes Kom vila hos mig very much on the new album. That was one of the first songs Micke wrote for the album.

She says to Helsingborgs Dagblad she wants to pull the audience in up-tempo songs and wants to convey proximity in ballads during the tour. She thinks each tour is something new, every audience is special. It means a lot to her to tour in Sweden again after so many years.

She wanted to start the tour in Helsingborg, as she feels like home there. It’s extra fun that now Jokke Pettersson, her nephew is in the band, too, next to of course, Mikael Bolyos. Pelle Alsing, Christoffer Lundquist, as well as Surjo Benigh are also in the band.

To the question what comes after the tour she replied she always tries to take one thing at a time and now all the focus and energy go for the tour.

Then we’ll see what happens.

TV4 met Marie during the rehearsals

TV4 met Marie and the band during the rehearsals and did a very short interview with her. In the video we can most probably see the final design of the stage and the final outfits.

Ms Effe says in the interview that her head is spinning, but she’s very happy about touring in Sweden again after so many years and it’s gonna be so much fun. She takes it easy. Lovely to see her in such a good mood in the video.

You can hear Bara för en dag in the clip, so this song will surely be performed during the tour. It sounds goooood! A bit less than 5 days left!!!

Roxette LIVE – Travelling The World

I never thought I would buy something what is able to play a Blu-ray because of Roxette and not because of my fave actors. I also never thought I would buy it earlier than an LP player… But it just happened. And it was all worth it. Actually, the long long long long long waiting for the DVD / Blu-ray / CD was worth it, too.

As per the Blu-ray, I like how it looks like. I mean not the front cover, but how it is structured, the way the CD and the Blu-ray disc are placed in the case. Well, too bad that all the DVDs and Blu-rays seem to be produced in Germany (or at least most of them), since now we are all having this unnecessary and not too sexy stamp on the front cover. When I first saw it, I hoped it was a sticker which I could easily remove, but unfortunately, it’s printed as part of the design…

blu-ray_00_  blu-ray_01_

I started with watching the Gessle cam stuff & the guitar tech’s secret life from the Blu-ray as I thought most of the other 2 parts I already saw on TV last year.

The Gessle cam videos are still fun. What I like the most is that on the Blu-ray they, of course, have much higher quality than what we can see on Facebook. Even if you already saw most of them (yes, there ARE new ones), you can smile and laugh at what the guys & ladies are doing in the studio or backstage. Per was wrong when he corrected us that the ”So, Christoffer?” part is not 3 minutes, but 30. It’s really ”only” 3 minutes, but it’s a hilarious mix! 🙂

Then comes 12 minutes of ”Studio Work” from the recordings of ”Travelling”, the album. Scenes are from AGM and Atlantis studios with Clarence, Christoffer, Magnus, Pelle, Marie and Helena. Oh, and of course, Per. But you can mainly hear his voice and see him not too often. We got used to this during all these years.

The 3rd Gessle cam video, ”Travelling” is the longest, almost 30 minutes. It’s from several countries: backstage, soundcheck, food, some ”Jesus loves you!” and some more ”So, Christoffer?”, Clarence & Pelle & Magnus ice skating, band, Marie & Per, crew, etc.

The 4th extra is a 5-minute-long video of ”Mikael Nogueira-Svensson – The secret life of a guitar tech”. Micke N-S took care of the gear of Per, Pelle and Magnus during the tour. He’s talking about his job and shows interesting things backstage, like the Blue Swede Sex Machine is having problems all the time. He says he’s like a nanny for the musicians. 🙂 While talking, he is restringing a guitar.

Roxette_It_All_Begins_Where_It_Ends

After these videos I watched the documentary, ”It All Begins Where It Ends – The Incredible Story Of Roxette”. Most of it we could already see last year, but finally, Helena and Dea got their well-deserved part in the docu. Actually, this is the only difference I could notice. And it’s great as it is. No changes were needed besides the backing vocalists’ part. Oh, yes! Another important change is the subtitles. The English subtitles work well.

Roxette_COYH

”Roxette LIVE – Travelling The World” I saved for last. Chris did an awesome job with the live mix, but we already said that when we saw it on TV. At the same time, I still get dizzy from the constant cuts and I thought a year should have been enough to change them, but Favela kept them as we saw it in the TV cut of the live stuff. No clue why. Whatever. Crowd scenes are still mixed, but at least those confusing titles with mentioning cities and countries are gone. There are now more relevant scenes between the songs than what we saw on TV: backstage moments, fans running to the front row, the drum kit getting dressed for success, etc. Besides these, now it’s more like a real complete show. Awesome to see those 9 songs too, which were not in the TV cut, but made it to the DVD. This way we can enjoy e.g. Marie’s touching performance of ”Perfect Day”, some more of Per’s left leg dance in ”How Do You Do!” and their lovely moments in ”Things Will Never Be The Same”. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts are cut out from the final ”It Must Have Been Love” part, however, Marie and Per are still cut in from the video clip twice. But that’s fine. Getting this front row feeling and reliving the moments of the tour, one starts / continues longing for a new tour.

Last but not least, I love having the songs on a live CD, too. Some fans hear Marie from far away or have other problems with the sound on the CD, but my ears are not too sharp for that I assume, since I’m fine with the sound itself. One funny thing is that the preview pic of the live CD is not the final cover, but another sleeve we saw when we were guessing which the final design could be. If I have to choose between the physical release and the digital one, I go for the digital because of having ”Silver Blue” and ”Church Of Your Heart” as bonus tracks there.

All in all, if you ask me what took a year to release this material after we could see most of it already in December 2012, I’m not sure I could tell you. Maybe choosing what to include in the extras from the tremendous amount of Gessle cam videos was a bit time-consuming or doing the subtitles. No clue. But it doesn’t really matter now that it’s in my hands and I could watch it and listen to it. I could do it 24/7. More than that, I want a Roxette tour! NOW!

New Pelle Alsing’s drum kit for the 2012 tour

Peter Samuelsson has recently prepared a project for new Pelle Alsing’s drum kit for the Roxette’s World Tour 2012 and posted it on the Roxette Official Facebook page. The idea for new drum kit design came from the well-known backline Mikael Nogueira Svensson, the one who helps Per Gessle with his guitars and usually takes photos of audience before the concert.

This new drum set will used for the very first time in Auckland, New Zealand in just 26 days!

“The best band our fans have ever seen” has a word!

We proudly present the Brazilian questionnaires that RoxetteBrasil.net did with all the band members during their stay in South America. All them responded promptly and personally commented their answers during the flights and hotels. A big hand to Dany Etchart who sent us this interview!

CHRISTOFFER LUNDQUIST

ROXETTE BRASIL: It is your first time in Brazil. What are your expectations?

Well I would admit since I don’t know much about Brazil, only from school, my expectations are very normal, warm climate, friendly people, different culture, etc. But already after two days I blow away by the friendliness, hospitality and warmth we’ve encountering. I love it here – already. And the audience reaction – wow…!!!

RXBRA: What are your biggest musical influences?

60’s and 70’s rock and pop music like The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, etc etc. I seem to be especially close to music made between 1967 and 1973 for some reason, almost everything from that period seems to hit a chord with me. But I listen to lots of different music, classical music, I love opera, etc etc. There’s sooo much great music to discover.

RXBRA: How does it feel to be part of the Roxette world today?

Oh, it’s an honor, a privilege, an adventure, an education, and on a personal level it’s about doing fantastic things with your friends… it’s unbelievable really, what can I say?

RXBRA: How did you meet Per? (Was because of Brainpool) And Marie?

Yes, my band Brainpool was the first band Per signed to his Jimmy Fun label in 1994. And three months later we’re supporting Roxette on their “Crash! Boom Bang! Tour”. That’s how I met Per and Marie and on that tour I also became great friends with Clarence. Then Brainpool was asked to play on a couple of tracks on “World according to Gessle” and after that just stayed, I guess!

RXBRA: Soooo Christoffffffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerr, say something for Roxette Brasil website readers!

THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO INCREDIBLE NICE, WELCOMING AND FRIENDLY TO US!!!!! I badly want to comeback to Brazil now, I love it so much here already! Thank you all!!!!
