Per Gessle about the new albums and duets – interview by Swedish Radio P4

Swedish Radio (Kulturnytt P4) tried to reach Per Gessle after yesterday’s great news about his 2 new solo albums. They write that Per is now in Nashville and they interviewed him via e-mail.

Swedish Radio asked Per what made him want to do duets with Lars Winnerbäck, Linnea Henriksson and John Holm. Mr. G says often cooperates with Helena Josefsson when he is making his solo albums. This time she is there again and is doing backing vocals on almost all songs and sings one song in duet with Per. Per says Helena is incredibly talented and always lifts his songs to the sky. Their voices are a perfect match. But when Mr. G started writing last summer, he started thinking about male duet partners. A regular duet can bring a different angle to the text. When a guy and a girl sings it sounds in a certain way, but when 2 guys or 2 girls are singing, it becomes something totally different. Interesting.

Per says he has many things in common with Lars Winnerbäck. Small-town background and quite similar taste in music even if Mr. G is older. Per always liked Lars. They met at Sofiero in Helsingborg when he was on tour last summer and Per asked if he wanted to sing a duet. Thank God he wanted.

Besides Helena Josefsson there were other musicians involved: Christoffer Lundquist, Clarence Öfwerman and Anders Herrlin. They were also there in Nashville to record the songs.

The autumn album will contain duets with Linnea Henriksson and John Holm. Per says John Holm was one of those who made him start writing his own songs when he was fourteen, so it’s a personal highlight in Per’s life to record with John Holm. According to Per, John Holm is still a unique singer and personality.

Regarding Linnea Henriksson Per says he had an uptempo song he thought Linnea could sing the chorus on. But after a few weeks in Nashville, he realized that it did not fit into the project, so he put it on hold. But then he had another song that screamed for Linnea’s blue tones and it became so fine. Per is very happy and proud that Linnea wanted to cooperate.

Per says to his great surprise, he had studio time left when they were done with the 14 Swedish songs. Then he thought he could do duets in English with country-girls too. He had two quite newly written songs that he thought would be great to record in the Nashville environment. He called some friends in Nashville’s music industry and got tips on 2 talented girls, Savannah Church and Jessica S. who suddenly appeared and rounded off this incredibly exciting project.

To Swedish Radio’s question regarding how Per would describe the album he said he have tried to make very beautiful songs, arrangements and productions. Stripped down, but efficient. He went started the project with no limits and rules, he didn’t want to sound a certain way or do anything in a format which is now unfortunately characterizes the entire music industry. He wanted the local musicians to be part of and create the songs’ design. Per let them play on almost all songs to see what happens, then they edited it all afterwards and took away what they thought didn’t fit.

Per’s solo projects in Swedish are always quite text-oriented. So it is this time. Perhaps more than ever.

Each song has its own story, it’s about being young and getting older. To look back but also dare to look ahead. Happiness, but also disappointment. About things don’t always turn out as planned or as expected. I have lost my mother, brother and sister in the last three years and it has certainly put its weight on the lyrics and my life in general. But life goes on.

To Swedish Radio’s question if there will be duets on stage, Per replied who knows. He has the habit from Roxette.

The first album, En vacker natt, will be out on April 28th. The first single “Småstadsprat“, a duet with Lars Winnerbäck, will be released on March 17th.

The second album, En vacker dag, will be released on September 1st.

Short but intense Roxette gig at Tele2 Arena

Out of the blue there came a post from Per on Roxette’s Facebook page tonight:

FRIDAY UPDATE: Greetings an hour before gig #63 on the XXX tour. We’ve found ourselves at the Tele2Arena in jolly Stockholm playing for the Tele2 company and their customers, guests and friends. Look forward to this, folks. The train keeps a-rollin’. Vids coming up! /P.

We’d been looking forward to something still this year, but this time it was hard to find out what Per meant with his comment in September:

Yep, could be the last Rox concert this year. Might pop up something else as well. Will let you know, folks! /P.

So now we know it was about another corporate gig. And by that, being a corporate show, it can’t get a number. Just like the Warsaw gig didn’t get a number, because that one was also a kind of a private gig. Once tickets are not on official sale and a concert is a closed event, it just can’t be part of a tour. Not of the XXX tour for sure. We already had a number discussion with Mr. G when we didn’t count the cancelled show in Mainz. Then we gave in (because of the T-shirts… 🙂 ), but now we won’t. We can’t. 😉 We go on counting again from the first gig in South Africa. #62 is going to be Johannesburg if there is no other official tour date before that show.

So the band performed at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm. Gyllene Tider played there in 2013 as the first musical act. Hopefully, the sound of the arena has improved during the past 2 years. Capacity of the venue is 30,000 for all-seater football events and 45,000 for concerts. Madonna did a show there some days ago for 40,557. We don’t have any confirmations on how many attended the Tele2 party.

One of the interesting things at this short Rox gig was that Dea is doing the Julgalan shows around Sweden and the premiere was exactly tonight. This way she couldn’t be on stage with Roxette, but there has to be a back-up vocalist and yes, Helena was happy to come back and join the gang for this bonanza.

It probably wasn’t worth bringing the XXX tour stage set to Tele2 for this short happening, so curtains were used as background design and the technicians played with the lights to make it look more interesting for the crowd.

Roxette went on stage after 11 pm and performed 7 songs.

Setlist

1. Sleeping In My Car
2. Dressed For Success
3. Dangerous
4. How Do You Do!
5. Joyride (intro: Gyllene Tider – Ljudet av ett annat hjärta)
6. Listen To Your Heart
7. The Look

Per after the show:

Short but sweet gig at Tele2 tonight. 7 songs. Great crowd, Helena did a fab comeback. Vids tomorrow, folks! /P.

Looking forward to those videos!

Helena Josefsson’s new album to be released in October

helenaHelena Josefsson visited SR P4 Göteborg today and revealed during the interview (click below) that she has been recording a jazz album with the trio Kontur. The album will be out in October 2015, but you can already listen to the first single out of the album, “Time After Time”,  a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s song. The track is available on iTunes, or Spotify, among other digital music providers.

Besides explaining about the album, she performed the songs “Happiness” and “Det vi saknar nu” live in the studio.

Helena performed “Time After Time” with Kontur back in October. The performance of “Ordinary World” and “Det vi saknar nu” are also available on YT.

Don’t Go Dark is out in its complete length

As we informed you 2 weeks ago, there is another house music project of Per Gessle. Per cooperated with Kill FM and wrote the lyrics and the melody to their new track, Don’t Go Dark. As Mr. G informs, it’s called topline songwriting in the Crazy World of Dance, which charmed not only him, but also Helena Josefsson who provides the lovely vocals for this song.

Kill FM’s Don’t Go Dark EP is now out on iTunes and on WiMP, but it’s only a Scandinavian release so far. You’ll find 3 versions of the song. The original version and the instrumental mix are 4:08, while the radio edit is 3:05 long.

The song already got great support from several DJ’s, also from David Guetta among them. You can read a whole list of supporters under the video on YouTube in the description part.

The lyrics don’t seem to be too complicated, but I’m still not sure if I understood the lines correctly. Here is what I can hear (feel free to correct it):

Don’t Go Dark
(Words & melody: Per Gessle; mix: Kill FM)

I couldn’t believe my eyes
I couldn’t believe my eyes
I gave my heart to a simple cause

I couldn’t believe my ears
I heard you were in tears
You gave your heart to a simple cause

Don’t go dark on me

I couldn’t believe my ears
I heard you were in tears
You gave your heart to a simple cause

You have a great face made to smile
You have the power to walk a mile
You got everything you need

Don’t go dark on me

Thanx for the cooperation in understanding the lyrics, Mandy Sedgwick and Celestte Williams.

Yet another Per Gessle related house music project

It’s still not the David Guetta cooperation, but after Heikki L’s ”You Don’t Want Love”, another house music related project of Per is out soon. Kill FM, a Swedish house duo (Kim Lindén and Jimmy Andersson) release their ”Don’t Go Dark” EP on 23rd June. This time it’s not Per who is singing, but Helena Josefsson. If you are following Helena on her social media sites, you know that she is now working as an optometrist besides taking part in several music projects and preparing her first jazz album. Some days ago she talked about the cooperation with Kill FM in an interview, but then it wasn’t known that the lyrics of ”Don’t Go Dark” are written by Per Gessle. Now the song had its premiere on Swedish Radio P3 and there they mentioned that the words are by Per.

The official preview of the song you can find on YouTube and on SoundCloud. Even David Guetta seems to like the track since he already used it in his latest DJ Mix 206 2014-06-08 (check it from 8:48). So step by step we are getting closer to that Guetta project it seems.

Update by Per:

YES, IT’S TRUE UPDATE! New track by Kill FM featuring Helena Josefsson who is in top shape and singing so well. I wrote the lyrics + the melody. It’s called “top line” in the Crazy World of Dance! Enjoy. /P.
