Interview with Åsa Gessle in Hallandsposten

asa_gessle_in_hallandspostenThere is a long and very nice interview with Åsa Gessle in Hallandsposten today, both in printed format and on their website. You will also find some cool pics of Fru Nordin in there. Interview is done by Christian Albinsson, pics by Anders Andersson.

Åsa talks mainly about Hotel Tylösand, her role in the hotel’s life, her designer career, her relationship to Per, as well as her love towards Halmstad, life around Roxette and her filming on tours.

The article mentions Åsa and Per acquired Hotel Tylösand relatively cheaply in 1995 together with businessman Björn Nordstrand. Åsa says they re-invest a lot into the hotel each year. She finds it fun that the hotel is constantly growing and renewed, because she always had a dream to run a hotel, although she thought that it would rather be a small boutique hotel in the countryside than a large conference center.

Regarding Per, Åsa says he is more interested in the art hanging on the hotel’s walls and what kind of wines are served at the restaurants, design ideas, appearance etc. are more Åsa’s thing.

In the Hallandsposten interview she mentions there are plans to create a sun terrace on the roof top of the spa building. Mrs. Gessle says many of her favorite hotels abroad have such a sun terrace with a bar. She is very proud of her babies, Leif’s Bar & Grill and Bettans Bar and says she feels herself at home there.

She talks about how she ended up in Halmstad 33 years ago, in 1982, when she moved to there to open a clothes shop with her then-boyfriend. Their relationship came to an end and she was introduced to Per by a common friend of theirs, Lars Nordin.

I already knew who Per was, but Gyllene Tider were not exactly my idols, so to speak. I had also lived a few years abroad and had not really kept track of Per’s career.

As Åsa tells Hallandsposten, love came approximately a month later, when Per sent her a letter written in tongue-in-cheek style, which truly characterizes Per. He wrote about her dog and if she could kindly leave the dog at home if he had a chance to invite Åsa for dinner. Since then they are a couple. By the way, Fru Nordin says Per still likes writing handwritten letters.

As written in the Hallandsposten article, Åsa planned everything around the Roxette trips. She and Per were travelling together since 1989, stayed at many hotels and in the beginning they could see less of the cities they stayed in, but nowadays it’s quieter and they have time to stop and collect impressions.

Besides organizing the travelling and gathering inspiration from different hotels, Åsa has always had a camera with herself. The Jonas Åkerlund film (Roxette Diaries) we already wrote about will soon be completed, however, it’s still not decided where to broadcast it.

Hallandsposten writes about Halmstad life being perfect for Åsa, she loves living there, while Stockholm suits Per more. He has more social life in the Swedish capital.

I also like to go out and dance to dance bands, last time about a week ago in Västerhagen. I still have sore muscles. Dancing to dance bands is not something I do with Per. 🙂

We’re going home to Halmstad to gather strength. I love to go to Prince Bertil’s path, which I do almost every day. It’s awesome that new things are happening there all the time and the landscape changes along the way. My favorite spot is Tylöbäck where there is a kind of magical atmosphere, although I think one should clean up a little of all the old trees…

Another favorite spot is the garden where Åsa and Per like just to sit and enjoy peace, and to have breakfast in the special breakfast corner.

It’s nice to have a little routine. Per always drinks filter coffee at certain times, like an old lady, ha ha.

In the interview Åsa talks about her designer career. It started in 2007 when there was a housing exhibition in Halmstad and Lars Nordin asked her if she would decorate one of the apartments. First she said no, because they were in the middle of a tour, but she now mentions the real reason was that she thought it was a little scary. She accepted the challenge in the end and she used By Rydéns lamps in that apartment, so she got in good contact with them. Now she is designing lamps for them. The theme is love and peace and the peace mark is a central element of the design. There are 1 or 2 lamps each season designed by Åsa, who has learned it step by step that it is important to believe in and challenge yourself.

For Åsa, it is obvious that love makes us better people, and her message is that we should be kinder to each other and be happy for each other’s success.

Roxette XXX Tour – Dublin, Ireland (3Arena) – June 1 – #36

Last time Roxette performed in Dublin was 3 years ago and they played at the same arena which was called The O2 Arena back then. The show was one of the best gigs during that world tour according to those who attended it. Even if Irish people came late to the venue last night, no stressing about the front row at the anyway quite small standing area, the arena was fully packed already by the time Eskobar got on stage.

Just some minutes before showtime Per posted the crowd pic. We were afraid he would miss the start of the concert while being busy on Facebook, but he made it to the stage in time and they all kicked ass with Sleeping In My Car. Mr. Left Leg Stomper was in top form and Ms. Marie also enjoyed the show to the full, as well as all band members who were wearing a hat and those without a hat.

The crowd was loud and it wasn’t necessary to ask them to sing along. They loved the setlist and sang along all songs happily by themselves. Great atmosphere, rocking band, noise-making crowd. What else could you ask for? Some balloons maybe? Oh yeah. No surprise there were balloons during Joyride, but it’s always much fun when they get close to Per. Now he picked up one landing in the front part of the stage and threw it back to the crowd when they came back for the extra songs. See it in this video.

At the end of the concert someone threw a bra on stage. Magnus picked it up and handed it over to Per. Mr. G took it and when he saw what it was he gave it right back. LOL. Poor guy. 😉 You can see it at the end of this The Look video.

Per’s long and meaningful post after the show:

DUBLIN UPDATE: Oh the land of Guiness and U2. It’s always a pleasure being here. Truly fantastic evening at the 3 Arena (last time we were here it was called O2 Arena, the first time around it was The Point… what’s happening to this world?).

Beautiful crowd tonite + a decent band, we certainly had a good time. Hope you enjoyed it too, folks!

Chris sneeked in both Jailbreak and Dirty Old Town as well as the Irish Rover. Well done, professor O’Lundquist! Next stop: Trondheim, Norway. Cheers, P.

Now comes a little break until the next gig, which is on 13th June in Trondheim, Norway. That is a sold out show by the way.

Vote for Roxette and Roxers!

Nomination period has started for this year’s Rockbjörnen (music prize awarded by Aftonbladet annually). 2 years ago we wrote about Roxette’s Rockbjörnen history and last year our collective voting for Marie was enough for her to be on the shortlist. Unfortunately, in the end she didn’t win the award, but now here is the chance to vote again. Since Rockbjörnen is focusing on live acts and Roxette is now on tour, we can vote easily. So, please, fill in at least the live band of the year and fans of the year boxes at the voting link. You can surely fill in other boxes, too. This year Aftonbladet introduced a drop down menu for those who find it hard to nominate a band / artist / etc. by themselves and if you check it, you can see they have Roxette on the list for the bands and Roxette fans on the list for the fans of the year. Yay!

Vote HERE each day until 22nd July!

If you can’t speak Swedish, we help you which boxes to fill in and how you can proceed with your voting:

  • Årets livegrupp = Live band of the year: Roxette
  • Årets bästa fans = Fans of the year: Roxette fans

After filling it in, click on ”Nästa” (= ”Next”) and fill in your name (first name & surname), e-mail address, mobile number, year of birth (födelseår) and whether you are female (kvinna) or male (man) or other (annat), then reply to the control question (e.g. 2 + 2 = 4). If you want to receive info and offers from Aftonbladet, leave the tick in. ”Tillbaka” means ”Back”, ”Rösta” means ”Vote”. It’s simple as that.

Roxette XXX Tour – Antwerp, Belgium (Lotto Arena) – May 29 – #35

Tonight it was already the 35th show on this tour. Last time Roxette played in Antwerp was 6 years ago, during the Night of the Proms happening in 2009.

The band hit the stage with much energy and got the huge crowd of Lotto Arena sing along already with Sleeping In My Car. Marie was on a high, acting much with the fans during the whole show and Per had his batteries fully charged, too.

The crowd was getting wilder and wilder and burst out in a la-la-la-loud sing along. Actually, the party audience made their voice heard all night. Just to quote some of their comments regarding how much they enjoyed the show: ”They still have it!”; ”Still top!”; ”Forever the best!”; ”Roxette is still rocking!”; ”Lots of respect!”; ”Man, I’m reliving my childhood right at this moment! They’re brilliant!!!!” etc. Great to hear all the positive vibes.

One die hard German Roxer, Astrid Lenhard even called her friend, another hardcore fan in Austria, Karin Lessjak (who couldn’t be there at the concert) when Marie and Dea performed Watercolours In The Rain / Paint to let her hear Marie singing via the phone at least. Emotional!

The great Anton Corbijn was there in Antwerp, too. The new monitor engineer, according to Per. Didn’t he mention in an interview that they might make a video for the upcoming single? Hm. Could it be that they will work together with Anton on that? Would be fab! What we know for sure is that he took photos during the concert. Hopefully, we get to see them soon.

After Mr. G found his lost password to Facebook or the internet connection in Belgium got better or just took his time off (it’s not too common he doesn’t post for more than 24 hours 😉 ), he posted this after the show:

ANTWERP UPDATE: Yeehaa! Fab evening in front of a pumped up crowd in a sold out Lotto Arena. Great vibe, lots of familiar faces everywhere. Thanx for making this yet another everlasting memory from Belgium!!!! And hey, now it’s Marie’s beeday!! Cheers! /P

It’s indeed Marie’s birthday already. Hip hip! Some Roxers had the chance to sing her Happy birthday after the show, when she was leaving. They made Marie very happy about it. She smiled while they were singing, waved and thanked the fans so much. She said: “You’re always the best, remember that!” Watch the video of it. Thanx for filming and sharing it, Gyöngyvér Simon!

Next gig is on Monday (1st June) in Dublin, Ireland.

It’s May 30 – again! Happy Birthday, Marie!

8
All photos by Kirsten Ohlwein

Is it the 30th of May again, already? It feels like we have celebrated a very special birthday only yesterday. So, apparently, another year has gone by. Many great Roxette shows are behind us and many great things are still to come (more shows, a biography of the woman, a new album).

So, here we are again. The Roxetteblog team wishes the invincible, strong, brave, iconic and ebullient Marie Fredriksson a very happy 29th birthday. (Women never get older than 29, we all know that!) Have a great day! We are certain that there are some fans out there in Antwerp who not only enjoyed another great show of the European leg of the World Tour 2014-2016 but who definitely will get the chance to congratulate you in person today.

Thanks for all the joy you bring, for the role model you are for so many of us and for the strength you keep to show to us. A strength that keeps us carrying on as well.
